Wide load with a DPU doesn't slow down as it flies through a neighborhood with parked cars on the street. NS Mow worker inspects the track just before a train. Filmed in Elwood, Indiana on 2023-09-29.

In my neck of the woods, railroad rights of way are 99 feet wide so NOTHING can lawfully be on or built on about 45 feet of land either side of the roadbed. What’s seen here is insanity! Even a relatively minor derailment would wreak havoc!

These shots thrill me too. When I was little I often dreamed of steam engines running in our street in the heart of Munich Germany. In reality it was a cute electrical street car which gave way to a bus service in 1960.
@ludwigsamereier820411 ай бұрын
Here in Germany there are no 3000t freights rumbling on a public street at say 30 mph. Actually we do have a handful of tracks laid right across small towns. We call them "Ortsdurchfahrten" The most famous is the Ortsdurchfahrt Olef. When a train goes thru that townlet, it must be preceded by a man waving a warning flag. The train is even slower and crawls at 2 (two) km/h. On top of this the scarce trains are no longer than 100m. These days however military gear is forwarded also on such remote branch lines.

Not even close to 15mph. At least 35mph+. Watch how much the train bounces when it gets to the pavement. It's got to be moving pretty good to bounce like that.
@rc39199511 ай бұрын
Ill say this he's moving according to film about 72 feet in 3 seconds . You can do the math . 72 feet comes from how long a typical 6 axle locomotive is. 3 seconds comes from how long by film it took the locomotive to move in a fixed spot . And yes the track may not be up to par and flexing . did you see the guy in th high rail check the track just after the crossing . That's where a lot of problems occur and that guy knows there is an issue there .

I see these locations where the railroad runs down a residential street and it makes me wonder what came first the railroad or the street? It's not like an industrial area or warehouse district. If the railroad came first how they get away with building homes or a street for that matter on the railroad right of way. To me it would be kind of different if the back yards of homes bordered a rail line. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, across the street from homes where the homes back yard bordered with the CNW commuter tracks. Just curiosity.
@therailroadtiespiker11 ай бұрын
That's a great question...
@rc39199511 ай бұрын
I don't know if this answers the question or not . I can say this . The railroad will always open 20 ft on either side of the rail sometimes more for future expansion . IN a yard or other places owned by the RR they will own 20 ft either side of the outside track in the yard. Now some of the rail is owned and maintained by customers . But what you see here is streets that are owned by the RR either side of the rail . The reason that is is so the RR can maintain their own tracks and rite of way . If it becomes necessary to remove and replace the track they will have to close of the street on both sides of the rail . if they have to say only change out a few ties . they can do so and only have to close of one side . Case in point the CSX replaced rail and Ties in Lagrange KY back in 2019 they had to close off both side of the street . The fellow called Jaw tooth filmed this back then . The RR allows public use of the rite of way in this situation when they are not maintaining the track .

Speed is designated by timetable instruction . and per train orders and or operation bulletin or special instructions . So there is about 4 sources of info available to the train crew. The NS can tell from just this film alone how fast he's going where he's at and who's on the train . If they are speeding the NS will dismiss them in a heart beat . And if PTC is doing what its supposed to it will put the brake on .

I'm not pointing a finger. I'm just stating how this company operates . Management at times watches these videos as well. And they are not always stupid. They got several ways to go about see there is compliance with their demands. They got the never fail PTC system so they think . it maybe as well they have a speed restriction through that town until the lead locomotive reaches point A . I don't know that but its a possibility . Also it could be the very reason why the high rail run ahead of the high and wide and got off . Don't know that but sometimes they do such things .They don't hesitate much if there is a dismissal offense going on and they see it.
