speedy group this year. Even the guys running 4.6/40 doesn't mean slow. So much more than speed goes into being an elite wr.

Some guys just have in game speed instead of just running to run. Patrick Mahomes ran a 4.8 but he always look like he pulling away from defenders in the open field. Plus speed means nothing if you don’t know what to do with it

Gotta be a route runner and know what your route is doing to exploit the defense, explosive in and out of cuts helps also. Speed is just the cherry on top.

​@@poseidon699 I think they're laser timed. Watch the end of the player's 40s in slow-mo. Once a body part (most of the time it was their knee) touches a certain area the time stops. Edit: Apparently the couple I watched in slow mo were just incredible awareness from the guy with the stop watch. Also, the 4.21 unofficial time has been corrected to a 4.28 official time.

@@vince11harris no ima ga fan and he had two quote unquote incidents at georgia. He beat the hell out of a ga tech corner during a game his freshman year, his sophomore year he squirted Water bottle on an opposing player when they ran out of bounds. Far from a mental case he was just a kid hes much more mature now he's going to be a great player. Esp with that 40 time. Check his highlights top hands in the draft he's made just some incredible catches during his college career.

Calvin Austin 111 ran a 4:02 , double check his time frame by frame and you'll see . Calvin got screwed on his time , check out for yourself . He was a half step pass the finish line and his time was a 4:12 .

It’s pronounced Calvin Austin III, not Calvin Austin 111. And yes, I agree. I think whoever it was in charge of starting and stopping the clock in the 40 yard dash screwed him over big time, and should never be allowed to operate one of these at another NFL Scouting Combine again.

Good point. Also, a big guy with decent speed is going to be harder to bring down which means more yards after catch. Usually I would take a 6‘3“ 4.45 guy over a 5 foot 9 inch 4.25 guy

@@elijahwise3060 Yea they used a stopwatch for the broadcast and it had a manual delay. The times we saw live were basically those proday 40s that people run after the combine. They hid the officials to keep people tuning in, there was no combine during COVID they need the ratings.

This is amazing to watch. I remember watching the combine only one guy would run a 4.2 out of the whole group. The GM's / executives will have to go back and watch a lot of film to see if the times match their production. A lot of position groups will fall down the draft board because of these ridiculous wide receiver 40 times. Chris Olave just made himself some more money.

I think there was a reason he was “unknown.” His speed never showed up on film to me. Meanwhile, Chris Olave ran almost as fast, but his speed actually showed up on film.

The combine gets so many people enamored with physical attributes. How fast or strong they are. How high can they jump. They become so focused on the results they miss guys like Kupp in the draft, who ran a 4.62.

@@demetriusevans4139 I think the amount of time people are right is a very small percentage. If Brady was this big and fast guy, would he have lasted until the 6th round? If Brees was 6’3, I think he goes in the first and not the second. Rice ran a 4.71 second 40 and he maybe the best receiver ever. There are a lot of intangibles, or lack of, that gets missed during the draft process.

@@Shakester71 Slow, unathletic guys who turn into stars are extremely rare. Can't build a thriving league by dismissing athletic freaks for Slow White guys just to make some folks happy. And no racism intended by my, it's just that every time I see a a comment like yours, it always references White guys. Try to build a league on 5'8 linebackers who and guy who can't run, it will flop.

Explain ? Did you see him play a lot..."Al Davis"( Raiders original owner he has passed for you young people ) He would base every single draft pick just on this 40 yd dash and more times than not he'd get burned year after year....Speed is great ( sure ) But there's much more that goes into being an NFL talent ..... Example (John Ross) 4.22 fastest ever 40 time before Thornton on Thursday ! And where does he play....that would be the Bench...God Bless that man I only wish him the absolute best !

@Santo Rosa, yeah he’s like that. Was a top 15 receiver hands down. Fundamentally I’d give him a top 10 spot in receiver rankings. Not just speed. Carter Garnon seems to know exactly what he’s talking about

For the record, Thornton did not run a 4.21. The official times were WAY slower than the unofficial. Thornton ran 4.28 and was the only 4.3 or lower. Olave's 4.26 became 4.39. Still the fastest WR combine ever with 8 sub 4.4.

All of the players at this combine are INSANELY GOOD football players, some just aren’t successful in the highest league in the land. I do agree tho, sometimes I think all of these flashy times/jumps/drills make it harder to decipher who is the best at playing football. Muddies the waters

Facts. But with speed, if you can't control it cutting in a route, easy pick for the CBs in the NFL. Chris Olave is the only one that impressive me with that speed to control his body with that top speed. He will be the first WR off the board hands down.

Christian Watson has the third & fourth fastest 40 times this evening of 4.28 & 4.31, the Atlanta Falcons GM, Head Coach & organization had better draft this kid with one of their soon to be three 2nd round draft picks (after they get a 2nd rounder for Calvin Ridley)
