A Jazz, Period. film...
In this instalment of Jazz, Period., we are privy to a chamber performance by Montreal musicians Lex French (cornet), and Gentiane Michaud-Gagnon (piano). The duo are performing in a quiet daytime setting at La Sala Rosa, a popular Montreal dance hall.
The tune is "Wrap your Troubles in Dreams", and suitably, French is playing an older instrument. The rare John Heald cornet dates to approximately 1910, and has the perfect, period sound for this traditional tune.
Michaud-Gagnon is the recent recipient of CBC Radio Canada's "Révélation Radio-Canada en jazz" award 2018/19. She is the perfect foil for French's traditional romp, with a ever-present contemporary flare to her seemingly traditional stride-piano accompaniment.
French is being recorded by a rare RCA 44-BX "Tuxedo" microphone, dating to approximately 1939, and we get the full nuance of his cornet performance.
