Hi Paul. Marius here, a wanabe woodworker from South Africa. I love watching your videos and as I am in the process of planning my own homeshop, I have learned a whole lot. Just some clarification on the star-delta starter. The star/delta actually refers to the way the coils of the motor connects to the mains. When it is running in star, it still uses all 3 phases, just connected in a different configuration to reduce the startup current, but with a lot less power/torque. Once the motor has reached its optimum speed, usually controlled by a timer, it will switch over to a delta connection to run at maximum required power. This is probably useless info to most woodworkers, but maybe it comes in handy in future. Please keep up the great videos. Cheers.

Nice video and great piece of machinery. Will you have a quick video about the storage of the wide belts? Are you using L brackets mounted to the studs? I will be getting a wide belt sander soon and am looking for the best way to store the belts so they can be easily accessed but out of the way.

Carl, I used 4" sewer pipe with a cap glued to the end and screwed into the plywood wall. I then took a 1x2 board and cut 45 degree angles on both ends to support the pipe. You can see it in a few of my videos now.

I’m on a Woodmaster 38 and have been looking to move to a wide belt, but worried about power draw…. I’m on a 25hp RPC, and it runs my SCM SI400 Nova well enough, but that’s only 11hp total. Do you know the actual amp draw on that machine under load? I know you can monitor the amp draw, but worried about inrush - 12-15hp sanders are hard to find!

When you say 50 amps, is that single phase amps or 3 phase amps? My 3-phase system has an 80 amp single phase breaker upstream, sounds like this would pop that. (50 amps 3 phase would be 50*(root 3) = 86.6. And my idler on the 25hp rpc draws something, easy to add up over the 80 amp single phase breaker I have for the RPC, if the 50 amps is sustained. Do you have more info on the app you’re using?

Start up got just beyond 50 amps three phase. I have not maxed the machine yet to understand "under load", but on a normal pass it is under 25 amps.
@pkwoodworking
@pkwoodworking 3 ай бұрын
Yes 3 phase. On the Phase Perfect 15hp version, they recommend a 125amp single phase breaker to power the PP. The app I am using is actually the GRIT automation web page for my dust collection system. It shows real time amp draw. The 50 amps is not sustained in my application.

Thanks, can't wait to get the SD10. It's a ton of money, so this helps. I haven't really been able to find anything to show the quality/features and whether or not it's "worth it." I was also considering the Cantek 24", which is ~$8k cheaper. The SD10 is $21k. Should be a great upgrade from the drum sander!

Have you called JKL Machinery too? They do the Casadei sanders. Basically the same machine so may be good to shop them too.

@markoffice8418 0 seconds ago Interesting videos. Question. I believe you said that a 15 hp rotary phase converter was used. My guess is that the main motor of the WBS is also 15 or 20 hp. What formula or website did you use to verify that your existing rotary phase converter was large enough? I am looking at purchasing a WBS but also only have single phase. Thanks, Mark

Mark great question! I have a Phase Perfect PTE015 Digital phase converter. It is conservatively rated at a continuous 52 amps. It has quite a reserve. It can deliver 200 amps for 2 seconds, 150 amps for 5 seconds, 110 amps for 10 seconds, 70 amps for 30 seconds... The wide belt is 18hp and the plate states 51 amps max, which is what my GRIT automation app says it draws for 2 seconds. So far there are no issues with the Phase Perfect handling the Wide Belt and the dust collector. I stagger the dust collector to miss the in rush current of the wide belt.

I cannot comment on U S geography and logistics but rule one with moving delicate machinery is to use specialist machinery removers and insist on no trans shipping. Don’t know if this was the case here. Using general haulage is asking for trouble.

It is incredibly expensive in the US to ship via a single truck or to use a specialist mover. Probably north of $4-$5k for this used sander. In the US, companies like Martin use a specialized truck dedicated to their machines when delivered new.
