Just heard of Curtis's passing, he was a great man and a great friend for everyone. So sorry Glen

Glen Hansard has, for the past 15 years, been crawling his way up to the very top of my favourite songwriters. I bought a mandolin last month just to learn to play this song

If everyone in the world were to pick up an instrument and just start jamming together, there would be no conflict. Awesome job.

+Tom Meny saw Glen Hansard in Atlanta a month or so ago. It was Curtis's home area. He had his family in attendance and Glen gave him an opportunity for a huge solo AND a vocal solo. It was such an amazing and moving performance. Glen and company might be the best band to come along in the past 2 decades.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SONG! BEST PERFORMANCE OF THIS SONG EVER! Except for his heroin addiction the cat blowing the trombone could have been my father. Heroin took everything from my father, and his children. This "opioid epidemic" is not new for us. Although both my father and mother are long dead now, there is a tidal wave of new addicts dying every day. A fortunate few will find long term recovery, some will die easy with a simple overdose, but like my parents many will die the slow, tragic, gangrenous death suffered from the consequences of lifetime addiction. Although they face a different battle than those in uniform, addicts do suffer a daily battle leading to a lifetime of suffering, sorrow, permanent injury, and death. Council those seeking recovery, grieve the dead, and pray for those still on the battlefield. Hugs. "Lonely deserter sing that old song, and sing a new one for the men still in battle, far from Heaven. Raise your voice up, and sing to them."

Keep returning to this, there is something hugely different about this sound, i hear it in alto sax and guitar, its a new styled genre of that great vocal against strings then the power of the brass, its where many styles meet but in a possible live pub setting, very much transfixed and inspired by this sound

What instrument it is which's played by Glen?
@Joeyd123abc28 жыл бұрын
Mandolin, its not big enough to be a bouzouki.
@FlatlandMando5 жыл бұрын
@@Joeyd123abc2 Yes, It looks like a nice ( kind of) Irish- style round sound hole mando. Probably maple sides cause you can see the sort of ripple & shimmer on the instrument sides. A beautiful open ringing strum sound for sure. It would be " woodier"& softer sounding if it was an " f- hole style top" I like the drive and big sound of Glen's mando.for this song.

My biological father was a valve trombone playing jazz musician. I have been told that he was also a selfish, abusive, heroin junkie, asshole. Every time I hear this song I grieve the father who should have been. Every time I hear this song I grieve the father all children deserve. Every time I hear this song I grieve the father I should have had. For a moment, enjoying this performance, I have a waking dream that he might have taught me music, and this might be he and I performing together as adults.........laughing and giggling together. Had he not been a self obsessed, selfish, abusive, heroin junkie, jerk, this might have been my truth. Pray for the junkies among us to weak to stop, to selfish to do the hard work effective recovery demands. Pray for their children, who will grow into adults bearing the tragic scars of surviving a junkies lunacy. Pray for their children, who will grow into adults to weak to stop, to selfish to do the hard work effective recovery demands. Just for Today let's remember to enjoy life's momentary waking dreams, and let's take great joy in the truth of every single blessing in our lives. We did the hard work. We survived, and thrived! Hugs......

It's a brilliant song, but no one mentions the deserter. Was he fleeing Crimea or Kherson??????? Not all people who flee the front are bad people. Sing to them as well.
