I worked in a backstreet video shop in the 80's and this was one of my favourite sci-fi movies of that era and came home with me regularly. It's a remake of Hell in the Pacific, with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune, another great film.

Another film of enemies on an isolated island having to get along is John Boorman's 1968 "Hell in the Pacific" with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune. Though a fan of science fiction, nothing about Enemy Mine, the title, clips, and PR, made me want to see it when it came out. Since you liked, it, I'll put it on my list to screen soon

I think this was my first experience in learning about diversity (born in '67). How two people could learn and apreciatt each other's culture. This was an example how a movie can influence a child for the rest of my life. I learned more from this movie than learning to play a recorder playing three blind mice. Lol. Can't wait for the review of Salem's Lot!

I watched this on VHS during a very unhappy time in my life. Both my girlfriend and my employer had told me that my services were no longer needed. The hopeful message of this film was much appreciated. As is this reminder of that message.

Dennis Quaid isn't really an actor you would expect to see starring in sci-fi movies, but he does it very well. Innerspace was another great movie he was in. I bet he would have been great at playing Hans Solo, he has that kind of Harrison Ford coolness.

This movie has a special place in my heart as it was one of three movies I saw in the theater with my mom. The other two were "Time Bandits" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom". Anyway, we both thoroughly enjoyed it.

Stargate SG1 also did their version of this movie and actually called the episode Enemy Mine. Lou Gossett Jr later did guest star several times on the show but it had nothing to do with that episode.

@Dan: the most of the props, costums, sets and model ships are still in the Bavarian Film Studios in Munich, where a big part of the movie was shot. Petersen shot in this studios also Das Boot und The Neverending Story. I was 1989 at the movie tour with my family. I had the chance to walk through the spacestation corridors, sitting in Dennis Quaid spaceship, see some masks and costumes and props

@@MoviesMusicMonsters A few years ago I interviewed the studios' branch manager named Thomas Hissia. Who is or was also responsible for the props fund. I don't know if he still is. But he told me that they don't sell any pieces of props, costumes, models, puppets or sets. The props represent film history and are part of the studios' treasure. This includes, for example, the costumes for The Great Escape (1966), which was shot in the forest area around the studios. However, they are willing to lend pieces for exhibitions. And since I have been collecting film props and production materials for an exhibition for a long time, I came into contact with him. If you want, I can send you Mr. Hissia's email address, of course as a PM and without guaranteeing that he is still in charge. The contact was at least 10 years ago.

Just love this movie. The Enemy Papers is a novel that explores the early Drac civilization and the years following the events in Enemy Mine. A wonderful read.

You Know, Dan. When you explained how the movie execs had to include a physical mine in the movie just to "explain" the title, it made my head spin. I took it from when it first came out as a rephrasing of "My Enemy". Great movie!

I pulled an all nighter with Barry Longyear (the novelist who penned short story and the excellent book that followed) in the hallway of a Hilton at a Denver Worldcon, with a good supply of beer. He has since gone sober (I hardly partake). It was one of the more interesting things I've ever done at a science-fiction convention. I learned that Barry based his story on the 1968 movie, "Hell in the Pacific," which had an American pilot (portrayed by Lee Marvin) and a Japanese captain (played by Toshirō Mifune) who were marooned on a Pacific island, where they fought WWII in miniature. Good times.

I was a kid in the 80's and saw this film in a completely empty theater. It was the same theater I saw Star Wars in but I loved this movie even though I was just 10 years old and on my own in the entire cinema. The visuals and soundtrack were so fantastic and the story was so embracing!

I read that in the scene that a child-sized doll made up in full Drac makeup was used for some scenes involving Zammis. One scene was when Willis picks up Zammis and runs through their tiny house with him held high in the air. The scene begins with us seeing the child actor portraying Zammis, then a hidden edit cuts to Willis running with the doll held up high.

ENEMY MINE. An out and out CLASSIC of the Sci Fi genre. Massively underrated. Some might even say a forgotten gem. I’ve never heard ANYONE talk about it. But it was heavily promoted in the Video stores at the time of the home video release . I’ll never forget that poster of Dennis Quaids face in that space helmet. So, so glad you’ve done a video on it. Many thanks for making this. 👍👍 btw. I’ve never made that connection with the word “mine” and the mine sequence. I always understood it as “my enemy” . Growing up in Munich in the 80s, I rememeber running through the exhibition sets at the Bavaria Filmstadt. You could go from Das Boot straight to the space station of Enemy Mine to Falcor, seeing the models from all those films (at least at that time the ship models where exhibited in the space station set area), the pond, etc. It was Peterson's world. Around 1990 (I was maybe 13) my friends and I went with my video camera and wanted to film in the space station set our own scenes for our own movie, but it was so full of tourists.

Way back in the 90's I visited Bavaria Filmstadt in Munich. They had some props and costumes from Enemy Mine on display, also from Das Boot, The Neverending Story, Stargate and Alien. They also had a full size replica of Falcor that you could ride in and they filmed you as you did. Great Studio tour too.

Yeah, this comes from a time when originality and creativity were still seen as being virtues in Hollywood and risk taking was also a thing. Loved this film as a kid and the moral of the story is more relevant than ever today. This and Alien Nation weren't overly subtle when it came to the lessons they were imparting.
