Widespread Issues Reported With MTA Buses Due To Snowstorm

Two buses collided with one another because of the bad weather, and dozens more got stuck. CBS2's Jessica Layton reports.

As a former bus operator in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, I had the opportunity to drive an articulated bus that was a “test” for the MTA. They were considering making a large order from a company based in Minnesota, and where better to test whether they’re roadworthy on snowy roads than in the snowiest place I’ve lived (and thus, driven) in? There was one custom-made New Flyer bus that had the same options as the buses that those that would be ordered for the MTA should the bus do sufficiently well in the snow. We (Metro Transit) had many New Flyer (articulated) buses, and when I was in New York City a few years later, I noticed that most of the articulated buses were the same type of New Flyer buses that I had the opportunity to test drive in deep, DEEP snow, ice, rain, sleet, but very little nice weather. None of our buses were ever equipped with chains on the tires or even snow tires, to my knowledge. In fact, I’d never driven any kind of vehicle where I used chains on my tires or even snow tires - even with rear wheel drive vehicles. What happened up there? I hope it’s warmed up a bit and the MTA gets their $4!t together.

No, you're wrong as a bus operator who has operated 4 different type of articulated buses I could tell you they all failed on the snow... the back tires have very poor traction.

@@chalee3484 For generations, articulated bus manufacturers have only made the rear wheels the drive wheels for the entire bus. You need the middle wheels and the rear wheels to drive the bus effectively year round This is common sense

I wasn't stranded, but met an older, disabled woman, crying and stranded. I walked her all the way home, through hard slush and ice, in the middle of the street. We couldn't get a cab, Uber/Lyft, or any bus, for hours Thurs night. All people kept sayin', was how the MTA dropped the ball on this "storm." Imagine, this isn't even Winter snow 🌨 yet. I live in the Bronx, and one bus was stuck in snow, and all the other buses couldn't get through behind it. A mess. 😠

It took me to two hours to get my son to school because there was no salt on the ground, it was a mess in the Bx .streets werent plowed. The 6 train of power line kept shutting down .

Qualitative BS in my opinion - Are chains really the solution? How steep are the roads? I always thought artics are bound to get jack-knifed in the snow chained or not: are there any standard buses around that could have filled in? Was staying home an option?

Isn't it time for NY's state legislature to require public transit agencies that operate in the state to put on snow tires during the winter? The Highway Safety Code of Quebec puts such a requirement on transit agencies based in that province but also most other vehicles that are registered with the local Ministry of Transportation (MTQ), but only from 15 December-15 March.

All weather tyres-not snow tyres Chains are supposed to be on the bus all winter, not necessarily on the tyres, but supposed to be carried Chains are also only to be on the drive tyres, those being the rearmost set. Does not help with jacknifing, actually having the rear tyres giving power with chains makes handling worse, pushing the bus into the skid.

The buses are broken. 79th St Central park Traverse is Cloed. None of the crosstown bueses have Chains on their tires. IT'S NOT LIKE the # MTA didn't know this was COMING.@NYCT BUS

It's not just MTA. Neighboring Transit agencies in the area were affected to. But don't point fingers at MTA. Even in a car you couldn't get anywhere hardly. The best way was to just walk that night. As quickly as that snow came, there wasn't enough time to equip the MTA fleet with tire chains.

There really is no excuse why bendy buses are not engineered to handle in snow. Its common sense that you can not simply have the rear wheels driving the 2 sections. Its too much for one set of drive wheels to push. You need the 2nd and 3rd sets of wheels to drive the bus. There should be traction control. Traction Control should be standard and snow tires should be applied as well. Of course bendy buses will still fishtail. But I guarantee that they won't get stuck. Truckers drive through all types of inclement weather. So don't tell me that bendy buses cant handle a little snow. Are you sure you are a bus/rail fan? Cuz if you arent, you really lack the knowledge to comment on these types of videos
