Land Cruiser BJ73, 1HD-TURBO CONVERSION

Part 3, 1hd-t conversion Toyota Land Cruiser Bj73,
We placed the H55f gearbox behind the 1hd-t engine with the bellhousing of a Land Cruiser 1HZ engine. Which is the same size as the 1hd-t engine. When we were done with this we put the engine in the chassis and we have made new engine mounts.

You may scale up your business easy. In Asia and Africa there is a huge demand for such expertise on Toyota 4x4. Those type of cruisers are heavily used on most pacific Islands and really nobody has a clue how to fix those engines. Although the engines are virtually unbreakable, people drive till the last breath because due the lack of maintenance. Nowadays, you see the models (just a new face) in V8!! The sound is crazy nice to hear. Lots of times you see drivers stop at the road shop and let the engine run idle while drinking a beer.

Custom 76mm exhaust really wakes the 1HD-T up.

That for sure. But this one is a 63,5 mm exhaust flance. I think it will do the job also.

@@Wiegman4x4Terschelling It will. This is factory size. I had trouble with EGTs until I went 76mm and gained better fuel milage and lower EGTs. Great work by the way.

I am a bit confused about the engine mount brackets. Why did you have to custom built some. I understand that the models are slightly different but why? Did they both not start off with the 1HZ which has the same block as the 1HD-T?

No there are lots of different types. The VM, the 3B, 1Hz and some petrol engines. So thats why we measured the position of the engine in a Hzj73 that has the 1Hz engine.

@@Wiegman4x4Terschelling Thanks for getting back to me. Nothing is ever simply, I have a 78 Prado in the UK which comes with a 2.4 four cylinder 2L-T engine. I hope to put a 1HD-T into one day so I need to do some more homework

The KZJ, RJ and LJ are short nosed 70 series. There called Light duty series and have coil springs. (My personal favorite) The 1hd-t/1hd-ft is to heavy and to long for that type. The best sollution would be a 1Kz-T engine for your car.

I feel so lucky to have one as they were a Japanese import which have never been sold in the UK. I will look at the 1Kz-T engine but I have seen a LJ78 like mine with a 1HD-FTE in it. If I can find the video I will send you a link. It is a beautiful 70. Really like the 40 pick up your doing, I made a comment about Roothy being jealous, assuming you would know about John Rooth in Australia. If you haven't seen his channel it's worth a look. Love your channel but love the work you do even more.

How did you go with the radiator for the 1hdt? What radiator did you use to cool the bigger motor?

For this we use a hzj73 radiator.

Yes the 1hd-t and the 1hz engine of the Hzj73 have the same dimensions. So this is a perfect fit. We are collecting new video material for the next part so keep an eye on it.
