@@bloodndestroyThere are about 50 000 American military residents. There are pubs where you hear mostly English. In markets like Rewe, Lidl staff don't understand English very often. But when you go out for cycling all active people (also oldies) speak fluently in English.

I’m moving to Wiesbaden in January. Initially I wasn’t excited but I’ve been watching all sorts of videos and reading all sorts of blogs so I’m warming up to the idea now. I’m having my first baby a few months after I get there and I’m afraid I’ll be homesick.
@AshleyLourenco
@AshleyLourenco 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ashley-vx9fg Wiesbaden is such a beautiful city. I definitely recommend getting connected as soon as you arrive to curb some of that homesickness (because it is real and a very valid thing to feel!! Especially when you are an expecting mama!). Adjustments can be scary and overwhelming, but I promise it DOES get better. Just give it time. I'm due with my second kiddo next week and I'm delivering at a German clinic, so if you have any questions or need any support, you just let me know once you're here.

I've been to Wiesbaden, Mainz, Bonn, Koblenz, Dusseldorf, Koln/Deutz, Franfurt/Sachsenhausen, Freiburg and a few other smaller cities I can't remember. Spent 10 days in Freiburg during the Summer Solstice a few years ago. There is something very special about the Dreisam River in Freiburg during the Solstice! The added bonus of having the Black Forest made this my favorite German city. It's also the warmest city in Germany. Maybe go check it out during the solstice. I saw so many people relaxing and enjoying the calm river at dusk. Very serene.

Sitting at the Dreisam on a summer evening is awesome. :) Freiburg also has the "Föhn", a strong warm wind often coming in the afternoon. The city center isn't too big and besides the Schwarzwald the Lake of Constace isn't that far too.

Yeah, there's definitely a Mainz-Wiesbaden rivalry. Wiesbaden was always viewed as being more for upper-class people and maybe being more snobby by the Mainzers. But Mainz is now getting more expensive to live in while available apartments are becoming scarce. It's not the hidden gem that it once was just a few years ago. A lot of my friends there have had to move further and further out. I'm heavily bias being half-American, and half-Mainzer, but I'd highly recommend moving there if the opportunity knocks.

Finally, the area that's most near and dear to me. I was stationed about a 15 minute ride on the S-Bahn from Wiesbaden, in Rüsselsheim Am Main. We were technically part of the Mainz military community, but I also made lots of trips to Wiesbaden. There used to be a much larger U.S. military presence in that whole area back in the day, but my old base in Rüsselsheim, along with most of the bases in Mainz and Wiesbaden are either closed or drastically scaled down now. I'm planning a trip to Germany in 2023 and will definitely spend some time back in that Rhein-Main area. It'd be cool to have a beer with y'all.

Enroe was born, or in the park behind the Casino where you find a statue of Russian writer Dostojewski - his novel "The Gambler" referrs to a larger group of Russian oligars, aristrocats who loved to spend time in their Villas during summer , as also traditionally Kaiser Wilhelm spent the month of May in Wiesbaden and so did many European Royals, - at one point in history Wiesbaden had more millionaires than any other city in Germany - it just was the place to be - and it's visible till today - and b.t.w the Schlosspark in Biebrich ( is an traditional location at Pfingsten of one of the most scenic and elegant horse show tournaments in Europe - certainly you missed the famous "Cafe Maldaner" - would have given you 100% authentic taste of Vienna, so you sure have to come back and check it out :-)

Wiesbaden was the residence city of the House of Nassau, the capital of the Duchy of Nassau, and then became an important city during the imperial era. I am born and raised in Wiesbaden, it's a great city. It was a wonderfull city to grow up in and I still love living here. It is just perfectly located if you like to travel, we love spending a weekend in Straßburg which is only about 2 1/2 hours drive. And there is so much to do an dicover in the areas directly around in Wiesbaden. The Rheingau is amazingly beautifull. Just be aware of our huge traffic troubles. For month and month the "Salzbachtalbrücke" has been our curse (there was even a radio jingel made for by a radio station they played for the at least twice daily really big traffic jams) and it was blown up just last weekend. Until the bridge is rebuild we will continue to have terrible traffic. And traffic politics in Wiesbaden in generall a big problem, even without the Salzbachtalbrücke.

Nice Video, nice impressions. Great to see my hometown from another perspective. For me everything is just normal, but to see my town through the eyes of visitors, awesome. Thanks for that really nice vlog.

I lived there in the mid-late 70s. The Fußgängerzone, Hauptbahnhof, Nero Berg, usw. were some of my favorite places. I worked in Schierstein and lived in Mainz most of the time. It was the best assignment of my career.

We were very lucky to be stationed in Weisbaden twice.... once in the1970's then again in the 1980's. Absolutely love this city. Returned on 2003 to visit and to attend the Chriskindlemarkt.

The Rhine River Valley stays warmer than the rest of the areas, in Mannheim, we generally had snow 2 weeks, in January, and then went back to t-shirts, but our HQ was Weisbaden AB, and sister unit was in Mainz

I love the Church in the mountain in Idar-Oberstein! It is so beautiful! Especially at night when it’s lit up! K-Town is amazing as well! Downtown BK (Bad Kreuznach) is lovely and it’s on the water. In BK you can go to Kuhburg Hill and see all of the city. I loved my 3 years in Germany!

I lived in Wiesbaden for over 6 years back in the 80's and early 90's. There used to be a great Mexican food restaurant fairly close to the Biebriech castle. My favorite restaurant was an Italian place called Scheffelstubens, on Sheffelstrasse not far from the Baunhauf. Anyway, hope you folks ended up choosing Weisbaden. I miss it terribly and loved seeing old familiar sites in your video. Thanks for posting it.

love greetings from Wiesbaden, great report - the next visit at Christmas time, check the "Sternschnppenmarkt" pictures... Thumbs up... PS: the Army area is a bit outside, the main part is at Erbenheim, there is an Airbase and a bigger living area... But therer are a lot more areas on the outskirts - Hainerberg Village and Aukamm area

A bit of history in Wiesbaden. I am sure you may have read about the US hostages held in Iran? 1979-1980 When they were freed they flew to Frankfurt and had to recover from their ordeal at "Amelia Earhart" hospital in Wiesbaden. I happened to be in the Army then and took the train to Frankfurt and saw the plane and then to the hospital.

K-Town was my grandpa’s first duty station out of the US in the 50s. A couple months into his assignment his American girl friend followed him to Germany (by ship) … they were the first American couple that got married at the Standesamt in Kaiserslautern 😊. Over the course of the following years they had three daughters, PCSed all over the place and got stationed in Germany a total of 3 times. They moved to a small village close to Wiesbaden during his 3rd tour…and decided to stay once he had retired from the air-force and got himself a contractor job. All his daughters ended up marrying a German and stayed as well ….Ironically, decades later, his granddaughter - me 😉 - met an US soldier stationed in Kaiserslautern, got married and after a few years received orders for Fort Bragg / Fayetteville North Carolina ….which is approximately 15 miles away from my grandpa’s home town 😅 I personally love Wiesbaden … unlike Mainz, it wasn’t really bombed during WWll, so all the incredibly beautiful old houses remained intact.

I was born and raised here. Some facts about the „Schloss Biebrich“ The „Herzog von Nassau“ builded it. The „Schlosspark“ was his garden… Imagine having a garden that is the size of a park… People who had a huge influence on world’s history visited the palace Biebrich as well. Like Napoleon, Hitler etc. I love your video cheers!

As a German working in Wiesbaden I can say that it's true that it is a beautiful city with a great amount of cultural and historical places. But for me it's the people who often make it not the nicest city around. They tend to either be arrogant or even rude at some points. If you cross the river Rhine and go to Mainz, it's a whole different vibe in my eyes. Yet I totally agree with most of the points you made, that's just my very personal experience.

Confirmed. I lived in Wiesbaden for 29 years. While the city itself is more beautiful than Mainz, many people are ‘schickimicki‘ (fancy-schmancy) or just very old, while the Mainz population is more down to earth and younger due to many students.

I hope you will come back someday and film the west side of the city which is the Nordfriedhof (beautiful), the Dürer-Anlage, Klarenthal, a weird church building called Mariä Heimsuchung, the valley town Dotzheim and it's forestpark and the very long street called Dotzheimer street which has tons of unique stores. I would love to see you present it one day. Maybe when you visit another city in the Hessen area, you can make a short stop at Wiesbaden again? I loved the video here and you did a great job of showing the city I was born in. Thanks.
