An HSA isn't an insurance plan. You're referring to an HDHP (High Deductible Health Plan) which can be an EPO, PPO, or HMO. HSA (Health Savings Account) is just a feature in some qualifying plans. That PPO his wife is talking about might just have one. This call made me laugh as an insurance agent. Insurance is freakin confusing, isn't it? :-D

Unless you are sick all the time the HSA is usually better than the PPO. HSA typically has lower up front costs like premiums and ongoing costs like max out of pocket. The PPO typically has higher premiums and higher max out of pocket but it's cheaper when you get health care for things like doctors appointments. The PPO is the way to go if you are really worried about your health and tend to spend a lot. The HSA is better if you don't see the doctor often. Also HSA has a tremendous tax advantage with the savings account.

I verify insurance for a living . Literally thousands of plans across the US . Never heard of a max out of pocket of 500k. The most I’ve seen is 12k (which is also ridiculous) Also - we always (if we can) go PPO. We have always always had a PPO. I have 2 kids under 4 and we go the doctor a lot . I can’t give them all my money to meet the deductible on the HMO/ HSA. A plan with an HMO/HSA can be very limiting on who you can see. With a PPO I can see anybody and I don’t have to get insurance approval .Also HSA is not an insurance - it’s just an account you put money in to pay medical expenses (which they also have for the PPO , they just call it the FSA) . When I was pregnant i wanted the best coverage with the lowest out of pocket and that’s what the wife wants . I had a HSA/ HMO when I was first pregnant and every time we went to the doctor “that’ll be $694,$312,$456” depending on what I was getting done . On my PPO I paid a flat $50 copay every time . The HMO/HSA almost broke us at the beginning

I am a Health insurance Broker Licenced Nationwide and in my 12 years of service I have never heard of anything like that, a 500k moop for a health insurance plan that is absolutely ridiculous..maybe a short term plan that covers you UP TO that amount but a moop that absurd. I think this illustration was very confusing for me as a broker so I know that the person on the other end was lost in the sauce..to keep it simple find out your maximum out of pocket is for both plans and compare the premiums...furthermore, an HSA isn't even an insurance plan it acts as a rider to an employer-sponsored HDHP or a High deductible health plan..so it was a lot of confusion in this Dave is great entertainment but please sit down with a licenced agent or broker before making life-changing decisions

HSA is designed to eliminate early benefits but provide a tax shelter whether you have medical bills or not. With a premium savings of $2088 per year and a max out of pocket difference of about the same ($2k) this becomes a bit of a no brainer. Take the HSA. you aren't saving "a bazillion" dollars (more like $1200 in tax liability) but there is very few circumstances that would justify the guaranteed cost of the PPO premium and the risk of a possible max out of pocket medical event vs the possible HSA higher max out of pocket and the guaranteed tax savings.

Did you really just say the max out-of-pocket could be up to $500,000? This is the reason you should let insurance agents discuss this. ACA limits the max out of pocket. And there's no way to calculate a person's better scenario without seeing the premiums. HSA are not always less expensive.

This total confusion about how Health Insurance works is what left a lot of people lost and have no idea of what is most beneficial for themselves and their families. This scenario has helped a lot of scammers to thrive in the health industry by selling people health insurance policies that do not cover them and cause them to have a financial burden on top of their health condition. Being a licensed health advisor helped me learn how the system works and how it evolves with changing laws and regulations. Make sure you find someone who know what they are doing and who you can trust. Do not buy any policy before you verify who you are talking to and what are the guarantees put in place to cover you instead they turn to be dishonest. Have them show their license to sell insurance in your state. Are they Health insurance agents or are they sales people or just marketers ? Hope this helps.

Besides Dr & hospital visit copays listed on your plan it is really hard to tell how much the insurance is going to take off of each bill based on their agreements with providers for services. I agree Insurance is very much a what-if kind of thing. The insurance company is betting you won't get sick and use up more than you put in and you are betting you will need more. The insurance company could not stay in business if they lost many of these bets. They are counting on the fear people have of being wiped out by a major medical event. Brian Rigney I'm with you Brian. My issue is that Dave makes it appear that feelings mean nothing with this issue and its strictly math. My opinion is that is both. They have to decide since the math can go either way, they have to decide what's more likely to occur. Kind of reminds me of the debate of whether to do the debt snowball or avalanche. Dave actually doesn't use math to decide since the math favors paying highest interest first.

Brian Rigney it's a good and healthy debate though.

this dude makes no sense. what are the chances of hitting the max out of pocket when the PPO is paying 80% of your medical bills throughout the year? I mean unless you're in and out of the hospital multiple times a year...

Free healthcare means government run. & we pretty much do have free healthcare. Bc if a diabetic is going into shock, they can get 911 and get treatment at a hospital to keep them alive regardless if they can pay or not. They may owe the hospital but they dont have to pay it (a homeless friend of mine goes to the emergency hospital and cant pay but she needs pain meds for the fluid in her legs). The hospital will save ur life weather u have medical or not. I reccomend u watch some Thomas Sowell or Milton Friedman bc becoming socialist healthcare system is a completely separate thing. Xoxoxo

There is no such thing as free. Maybe you want to pay most of your pay in taxes. That's what it is. 20,000 dollars apiece, that will be your"free healthcare".

No thanks! We already know what government healthcare looks like, it's called the VA. And looking how they run, they have no interest in health or care.

You either pay for you select insurance or you pay in taxes. Paying in taxes will cause lower care quality and longer waits. It’s simple math. High prices keep people from coming in for a checkup when nothing is wrong, which will clog the system. While yes high prices keep some people coming, it’s a small price to pay for the bigger picture.
