My husband served 21 years in the military, and from what I can recollect, the WIFE has control over everything; life insurance and ALL. Only if he was divorced would the family be given control. I remember sitting down doing the paperwork all those years ago, I was on EVERYTHING. Maybe her youth played a role in them doing that to her? I don’t know. At any rate, I’m sorry she went through what she went through.

The wife is telling the truth. I served in the military and now retired and you can break the policy up and have different people assigned to do different things. When they ask you specific questions and you respond that’s when the different forms come in to be signed. You can google the process. You do not have to have the wife doing it all. The wife was not shafted as she said she was grieving the loss of her mother and she thought it would be better for his parents to handle the burial process. Being that I worked on the process and briefings, sometimes it’s a bad decision to break it up because control again CONTROL gets in the decision making process and now you have a divide between the wife and the family. Once the wife gave up her permission to handle the burial then another form comes into play and the briefer reminds her of the right she is giving up. Then she signs her signature and the service member as well on the form because it can not be revoked. My suggestion based on experience and briefings in this field that I worked for 5 years is the spouse should handle everything. Food for thought ….sometimes when people see $$$$ signs they don’t care about anyone else. She’s not the only spouse that this has happened to.🙏🏽❤️

I have been around this for 34 years, and trust me, adultery is very hard to prove and often swept under the rug because the senior leaders are just as terrible. Also, the military usually does everything to make sure that the survivors spouse is not embarrassed by their misdeads. We had a married soldier who accidentally unalived himself while he watched p**n with a plastic bag over him head and suffocated as he pleasured himself. He was living in the barracks pending the arrival of his new wife and baby, so his body was not found until he missed Monday morning PT formation. After his body was removed from room and the investigation was finalized, his chain of command swept his room of video tapes, toys, picture and letters from side chicks and anything that would him look even more horrible. I have never seen a deceased soldier lose their benefits, so hopefully, she got the full $500,000 SGLI coverage because I have seen soldiers remove their spouses without their knowledge, and I have seen soldiers get divorced, but forgot to remove ex-spouses as well.
