The lyrics are so simple but so complex. Hank was know as the Hillbilly Shakespeare for his elegant turn of a phrase. The Pulitzer prize committee awarded him a Pultizer citation for his songwriting skills and his influence in moving country music into the mainstream of American culture. Yeah, THAT Pulitzer Prize Committee.

in the song im so lonesome i could cry Hank wrote .. the silence of a falling star lights up a purple sky. I took a man with the soul of a poet to see the night sky as purple but once you hear him sing it you never look at the night sky the same again. That is powerful stuff

Oh, how this man could paint a lovely, heart-breaking picture with words and music. Yes, there are other versions at a slightly picked-up tempo. Same for "I Cain't Help It ...," and others. He experimented with tempo more than key changes, grace notes, and other techniques.

Hank Jr. was 3 when his Dad died. He sang his Dad's songs at a very young age and many people wanted him to continue to do that, in effect being a Hank Williams impersonator. Bocephus was proud of his Dad, but needed to go his own way. As for not looking like his Dad, he fell 500 feet from a mountain in Montana and fractured his skull and face, requiring several surgeries and 2 years of recovery and therapy to speak and sing again.

In the short 4 or 5 years that Hank Sr. recorded he had 55 songs hit top 10 and 12 of those hit number 1. He was known as the Hillbilly Shakespeare. So much talent. Every show that he done he would end with I Saw the Light.

Imagine this legend living far beyond 29 years of age. Hank was the first super star, the first Elvis. Wait until you hear the story of "Your Cheatin' Heart". Hank's wife was Audrey (Miss Audrey). In the last hit, I Saw the Light, that was June Carter (Married to Johnny Cash). Watch the story/movie of Hank Williams. Thanks for the video.

It was June Carter that introduced the third song and Anita Carter who sang with Hank. Side note. Johnny's hit, Ring of Fire, was written by his wife, June Carter Cash, for her kid sister Anita who recorded it first. Johnny's version was a cover of his sister-in-law's.

These are the only video performances of him. This was just months before he passed. Hank Jr was 3 years old when Sr passed at the age of 29. June Carter usually played a silly character on these live shows. I watched the full versions of those two shows. She was quite the character. Lol It is pretty crazy how Hank III looks just like him, and sounds a lot like him (minus his more gritty voice). There's live performances of Hank III doing Hank Sr songs at the Grand Ole Opry in the late 1990's. I think he was even wearing one of Hank Sr's actual suits. They even made an album that featured all 3 Hanks doing Hank Sr songs. Hank III sounded pretty dang close to Sr on that album. I remember I wanted Hank III to play Hank Sr in the movie they made a few years back, since they look just alike. But whoever made the movie got Tom Hiddleston to play Hank Sr instead. I don't think Hank III would've wanted to play him anyway. Before the movie, Tom Hiddleston was performing in front of audiences to prepare for the role, and I saw Hank III make a critical post about it, basically saying that Tom couldn't "moan" the blues. I think he also said that he didn't like that they chose an Englishman to play Hank Sr, because he didn't think an Englishman could embody that southern type of character. He also said he would've rather someone like Matthew McConaughey play Hank, because Matthew was southern.. I'm not sure what to think of that actor suggestion. Lol

Hank Sr. Was born with a type of spina bifida. Depended on pain pills until a Dr. Told him an operation could cure him. His Record label refused to give him time to heal and put him back on the road. He died in the car on the way to the Grand Ole Opry after stopping at a motel to be seen by a Dr. That gave him too much morphine. He always called Hank, Jr. Bocephus. His mother dressed Jr. up like the father and put him on the road from when he was about 3 years old. That kept the music in the marketplace, That kept the family going. For years Jr. after his mother died, made $ 250,000 per year off of royalties. That was a direct result of Jr.'s on stage at a young age. Right or wrong, it kept them fed. Consider the time. In the 1950's there were limited employment opportunities for women. Jr's music is the same as his father's. In that, it was different from the "normal" music of the time. Late 40's early '50s music was swing bands, old-time Appalachian string bands, and Bluegrass bands. Hank Sr. ushered in the era of the individual singer, with the Hillbilly sensibility. When Jr. tired of being a clone of his father, he went out on his own. That coincided with his fall off the mountain. That coupled with the burgeoning "Outlaw" movement, Jr. found himself a niche. Neither Sr. nor Jr. were ever conformist music makers. That is why they are considered innovative and fresh. Their sound as well as their persona were fresh.
