WiFi PCB Layout Simulation in openEMS & Blender

This simulation shows how the surface currents flow on a PCB with a meandered inverted F antenna. The PCB is a two-layer 1mm thick FR4 board with many tracks that cut through the ground pours and the antenna is driven with a 1GHz bandwidth gaussian pulse. The results shows that this specific layout and routing can impact the antenna's tuning causing S11 to dip at 2.55GHz instead of 2.4GHz. This simulation also shows which tracks are affected by the antenna and vice versa.

This is great. I'm and RF engineer and use HFSS at work and was troubled that I couldn't try things out for fun at home. I knew about openEMS but not about Lubomir Jagos' FreeCAD plugin. I'm going to have to try this out.

You make the PCB in Altium right? Then you export and import that altium PCB into FreeCAD (how??) and work with this amazing plugin to generate the OpenEMS script. Or you make the whole PCB in FreeCAD and you are not using any PCB designer software?? The PCB in the video looks very detailed...

It looks like Sam use FreeCAD create the STL, and openEMS import the STL and run the simulation. I guess he export DXF from AD. But I think AD can export STL, why he use FreeCAD. Just my assumption ...

I actually use Blender to generate STL files. I also KiCAD to export PCB copper
