The polygamy guy was such a good lampooning of the American notions of freedom at the time. It was 2002 and the country had a hard on for freedom and veterans who fought for it (ostensibly). But were adamantly anti gay marriage, and phobic of virtually any thing outside of Judeo-Christian religion (especially Islam at the time). Basically, they loved freedom but only the straight European Christian kind. To put this character in making this commentary at this time was a genuinely courageous and ahead-of-its time thing to do. Big respect to the writers for that.
