I can remember being 9 years old in 1970 and hearing on the news that the F111 was over budget and over due (sound familiar), we went on the cling to the aircraft for another 40 years, because it really was worth the wait. We should still have a couple flying for shows like this! But I do know that's just not possible. But damn! It was an impressive aircraft

Realistically we probably still have a couple that are flight worthy and sitting on ice, they have a crazy load capacity when it comes to ordnance, particularly nuclear.

Is one thing to see it on a screen and I'll never tire of it but it's something completely different when you experience it in person because you don't just see it you hear it and feel it as the energy as the sound waves pass through your body and the heat from a 70 Fireball from thousands of pounds of kerosene ignited buy those two turbofan engine screams past you... I've saw it many times at the Avalon Airshow at the Melbourne Grand Prix is and it never got old as it's thrilled the crowd every time

I was there. In the back seat of my mums car, trying to see the fireworks. Since we live up north so we were a little lost in the city. Suddenly a large sound shook everything and scared me to death. A fireball overhead lit and reflected off the walls and I was amazed. I want to fly one but their gone now

I remember watching this when I was 7. I remember feeling the heat from the afterburner it was insane. 7 year old me was annoyed to hear they were taking these out of service. I remember complaining and my grandma telling me the FA 18s are better for the environment

Kinda silly TBH. All fighters go through a insane amount of fuel, a dump and burn adds a very tiny amount to the total fuel used
@robanzzz5124
@robanzzz5124 4 жыл бұрын
fast forward to now and FA-18's actually aren't as good as the F-111. They can't be used as a long range strategic bomber, have a lower pay load than an F-111 and from memory have a slower top speed so harder to outrun enemy aircraft. The FA-18 whilst an ok jet just doesn't compare to the F-111 which does almost anythiong. they should have retired the F-111 but replaced it with an updated version of the F-111.
@blaze6400
@blaze6400 4 жыл бұрын
@@robanzzz5124 The F-111 is much less manoeuvrable then the Hornet and is nearly useless in air to air combat and lacks the air to air radar of the hornet. The Hornet can defend itself when on a strike mission while the F-111 would struggle
@robanzzz5124
@robanzzz5124 4 жыл бұрын
@@blaze6400 The F-111 was more multirole but a bit more geared to be a long range strategic bomber whereas the hornet more or less just a fighter jet. Whilst the F-111 was less maneuverable it makes up for it by been faster and having better pay loads and been able to be used as a long range bomber. That takes me to my other point about making an updated version of the F-111. I respect the F-111 was aging but overall it was a very good aircraft deserving of an updated version with all the modern fitments of the time.
@robanzzz5124

I was working on a house in the northern suburbs and we had just screwed a ceiling up and sat down in another room for lunch, we heard an almighty bang and we all jumped up thinking the ceiling had fallen down, when we went outside we saw the dump and burn and realised what the noise was, it was the day before river fire and they were doing the test run. I can still remember the heat coming from it and the almighty loud roar of the turbine.

Sorry, not even close to the best, sadly no video of these really spectacular ones. One of the earliest, 5 abreast about a kilometre apart from each other, Northgate to Archerfield, badly advertised and really a bit of a surprise for many, five moving fireballs in the sky, created total chaos. Expo 88 closing, 3 came in close and then climbed in a sort of trident, high solid cloud, lit up the entire CBD blood red with orange flickering, seemed to go forever until the aircraft were just bright flecks. Story Bridge 50 Anniversary, they got into real trouble for that one, one pilot seemed to have "miscalculated" his height. I was in Captain Burke Park at the southern pylon of the bridge, you could actually see the crew in the cockpit by the light of the burn. A number of earlier Riverfires, standing on top of Kangaroo point cliffs, one passing on each side of me, having just lit up the fuel. One year they were really low, the intense heat, the monumental noise, the visual assault of the flames, the shock waves - a real visceral sensation, the sheer exhilaration of those aircraft so bloody close, ROCK AND ROLL!!! In STEREO!!! For me, that was the absolute best.
@Mazryonh

@@Mazryonh Sadly, no. I didn't even take photos. I was not brought up with photography, so even though I owned a camera (never a video), I hardly ever took photos even when I remembered to take the camera with me. My wife was much the same. We must have gone to Expo88 20 to 30 times (we lived in East Brisbane - walking distance) and we have maybe 8 photos, of them, two of her and none of me. i would love to find videos of those dump and burns, there must be a video of the Expo88 one somewhere, surely commercial video must have been taken of this and others. However, on KZbin, most of the F111 dump and burns are private videos, the few exceptions mostly being of the daytime Gold Coast Indy and the daytime final before the aircraft were retired
@robertnicholson7733
@robertnicholson7733 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mazryonh I may have posted this link previously: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4PHfKlqmLGcgpI the whole video is worth a look. About 45 seconds in appears to be a video of them coming in fairly high, having already passed over the Kangaroo Point cliffs. It looks like it was taken from the balcony of a high rise down by the river (I haven't identified the high-rise, I haven't lived in Brisbane for 20 years and my memory is getting dodgy). You can see it is two aircraft. The flyovers were nowhere near as close after they started building the high rises on top of the cliffs, they used to come in together just downriver from Lamb (?) House (now finally being repaired/restored/renovated/saved before it fell down).

All these losers in the comments talking about how “SAD” it is what’s happened to Brisbane since 2010 (when this was filmed) or how the left can’t have fun. I don’t know what you are on about? The last decade has probably seen some of the least change to the CBD in its history. Of course Newman built his bloody tower of power and Queens wharf is almost under construction, and honestly that’s about it. For gods sake, post war Brisbane was an overgrown country town, Clem Jones and others of that time managed to build better roads and stuff like proper sewage. Then through the sixties massive expansion, we lost the trams and more contemporary nightlife started to come in. The seventies and eighties were huge as a lot of the industrial parts of the city began to close and we got the cultural precinct. Thought the nineties New Farm and other inner city suburbs became what they are today. By the new millennium the city was pretty much where it is at today. Since then the population has grown and suburbs have expanded, there have been infrastructure projects and cosmetic changes for sure but if you tracked the trajectory of Brisbane from its birth in the mid 19th century to today I think you’d find that the last decade has not changed it anymore than other periods of time in-fact like most of Australia its biggest change came during the period of time from WWII to the start of the mid nineties recession. As for the left not being able to spell fun, you’re the one watching a river fire from 10 years ago and bitching on about a city which hasn’t stagnated with you for the last ten years, a reflection of how lost you probably are in a world moving forward as you crawl backwards.
