Curried bratwurst was invented by an enterprising German woman in the early days after WWII. There were Indian troops stationed in the British zone who had curry with them. Sausage meat was very poor quality at the time and she added the curry to the sausages to add a bit of much needed flavour. It was a huge success for the hungry German survivors and the rest is history as they say.

The story I heard - it wasn't Indian troops based in Germany. It was British troops who has also served in India, so they knew about curry and made the curry sauce to add flavour to the sausage. I think most Indian troops served in Burma etc in WW2

Hi Gareth. Before covid struck ,I was a continental coach driver . This brings back very happy memories of my frequent trips to Germany. I loved the bratties and the curry wurst. Thanks for an excellent review. Sadly I can no longer eat them because of the amount of salt.

Yeah sadly the amount of sodium in these jarred delicacies can be more than half of your daily intake. That's what kills then for me too. Why do they have to include a TBS of the Dead Sea in everything 🤔

Yes, I must now also watch salt consumption. If I ate half of one of these jars for lunch with a crusty roll, then the remaining food eaten during the day would need to be very bland.

Schnelly vans weren't allowed at my regiment, so we used to drive into the local village for a schnelly. I always preferred a normal bratty with frites and mayo, rather than a currywurst. Of course, our German civilian friends had no idea what a schnelly was, until we explained it as a Brit abbreviation. Aldi used to sell really brilliant brattys on the cold counter, but some years ago changed brands and they were never as good as the old ones: but still tasty. Lidl also sell some tasty ones.

Oh .... huh, I used to make something like this back when I was skint. I'd make a meal with a tin of beans, curry powder, and chopped up hotdogs and have it on chips. I remember those German fast food vans! When I was 9 in the 1970s. I stayed at my brothers at RAF monchengladbach, they'd routinely come on base and sell icecream from the back of a hatchback car, or these vans would sell you a skewer with a mixture of veg and horsemeat slathered in a rich brown sauce.

Strange that I happened to go to B&M yesterday for the first time in months. I wanted a 2m extension lead with 4 sockets. It was a pound cheaper than Tesco. And now you tell me about these German Currywürste! Well, probably not as good as a Currywurst in Germany, but likely still tasty anyway. I would go for the spicy one as well. And now the doctor has given me the okay to resume driving, I'm going to get a jar next Tuesday. The way you prepared these two jars was ideal. Either version would go wonderfully with chips or hash browns. The only difference with Tuesday shopping in future is no more Sausage and Egg McMuffin on my way to the shops! 🤔

Not sure when you were in Germany, but there was a guy called Wolfgang who used to drive his blue Schnell Imbiss van onto the Soltau training area to serve up his food to the troops on exercise, he didn’t serve Bratwurst only Bockwurst, but they were big & anything was a break from compo rats. Tried all that sort of nosh in Germany washed down with a load of steins 🍻🍺. I was based at RAF Brize Norton and the accommodation blocks were at the far end of the base near the NAAFI and pedestrian entrance/exit to the local town, Carterton. Quite often roll out of the Colonel ( Gaddafi = NAAFI ) to the gate where on a Friday and Saturday night there'd be a burger wagon parked up, run by a welsh guy...we used to love winding him up, he'd ask what can i get you, and the reply would be, oh, err, a botulism burger or a salmonella sausage hotdog with onions please !! That would be great mixed with polish beans. Perhaps a good candidate for seriously hot sauce.

They look right up my alley. A big dollop of mash with 'em and you'd have a nice quick snack! Will have to track some down.

Might try that spicy one on heavily buttered toast, makes a change from beans.

Just wondering what you could eat them with? Thanks for your great content 😊

Chips, hash browns, or just a crusty roll. I suppose you could always try rice or a hot baked potato. But my first choice would be chips done in the air fryer.
