My first encounter with Amharic Wikipedia is searching for Haile Mariam (the dictator of the derg) and I laughed my ass off at the two editors arguing in the article. I didn't know this tomfoolery was applied to all of Amharic Wikipedia. As an Ethiopian, I thank you for showing me this. Although, the translation does play a part in the wackiness of the article.

As an Arabic speaker (Amharic and Arabic are about as closely related as English and Swedish) considering the equivalent Arabic words, the errors in translation seem somewhat logical. Here are some examples: In Arabic (and Amharic I suppose) the adjective follows the noun, rather than the other way around as in English, so a literal translation would be States United of America. The word "angel" in Arabic is pronounced Malak, and a "king" is pronounced "Malik". Both are written the same way, so it would make sense that the translation would get confused and translate "king" or "president" as "angel".

As a translator, you should be aware that the translation is done by an extremely simple AI and not an LLM. When people refer to replacing, they mean GPT and similar language AIs. It's doubtful you can be so ignorant of them since they have indeed been replacing translators and the trend is only accelerating. And second, the language itself is an obscure one.
