I understand 75% of what he was saying! My parents are from Hidalgo, Mexico. Some parts of Hidalgo they still speak Hñähñu instead of Spanish. In some school in Hidalgo, students are able to learn how to read, write and speak Hñähñu. I hope this generation can still persevere this beautiful language and teach their kids and the next generation to come.

First generation, in the US, my dad speaks Hñäñu, he never taught me, I’m trying to learn, I think it’s sad how people don’t bother learning, it anymore. I never new where my family came from my ancestors, to the culture. Hopefully by learning the language, I’ll get closer.

Hñähñu = Otomi In case you are wondering what language this is. It is an indigenous language, spoken in central Mexico.
@saurophaganax_0
@saurophaganax_0 4 жыл бұрын
no, Hñähñu=Hñähñu. Otomi was the name Tenochcas gave to the Hñähñu, it's in nahuatl. History wise, Tenochcas and Hñähñus were enemies. Always use Hñähñu.
@quetzalcoatl3242

yia buoiii 1. Otomi is how it is named in Spanish as well as in English. Yes it comes from nahuatl. However, Mexicas were not the only Nahuatl People, they were a tribe from the Nahuatl culture. All the ancient Mesoamerican kingdoms/tribes had disputes among each others not only the Mexicas. However, Otomis were highly respected by the Mexicas, at a point that “Otomi” was a military grade.

@@quetzalcoatl3242 yes, that's why I Specified "tenochcas". They used to name everyone with their own language, for example "tarascos" for the purepecha people. Their view of respect was a weird one if we remember the hordes of elite ocelopillis invading and conquering hñahñu's lands in many times. I'm not saying any of both people were better I just think it's better to call hñahñus with the name hñahñu people have chosen to be called with.
@quetzalcoatl3242
@quetzalcoatl3242 4 жыл бұрын
yia buoiii I see. The intention is good. But it can be very confusing. Everybody knows the world “otomi” meanwhile very few people have heard hñahñu. Calling them Otomis is not respect-less. It’s just the way they are called in another language. Just that. It is like calling Spanish to “español” while speaking in English. It is just the English version. That is not respect-less.

It's great to hear this language still spoken, the Hñahñu peoples have been in mesoamerica for millennia, far longer than the well known "Aztecs" (nahua/mexica). The Hñähnu were later subjugated by these invading nahuatl speakers like the Mexica triple alliance where they were known in nahuatl as otomitl (otomi). The Hñähñu warriors were so fierce that the second highest military order of the Mexica were named Otontin (singular otomitl), these were warriors who had captured 5 or more warriors in battle. The Hñähñu would later get their revenge when they sided with Cortez against the Mexica. Aferwards they resisted Spanish invasion on the lands they had acquired after the fall of the Mexica. They deserve a lot more attention in both their history and surviving culture.

For anybody interested in learning this wonderful language, check out the "Mfäte-Promoción Cultural" (you can find it on Google) program from Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo! They are a group of young adults who are eager to keep the language alive and facilitate its learning. I finished their course recently and learned so much, would recommend!

The cadence is different, but this language is spoken by very different communities that developed different pronunciation for the same words so its hard to tell. I think he sounds like someone from the Estate of México (Ive heard them talk before) but someone would have to translate to know for sure.
