This video was recorded by Ana Laguna in Salamanca, Spain, where she and José Benito met at a conference for the Leonese language. Leonese is spoken by as many as 50,000 people, primarily in the Castile y León region of western Spain. A variety of the Astur-Leonese dialect continuum, Leonese bears close resemblance to other languages in the region, including Asturian, Extremaduran, Mirandese, and Cantabrian; collectively, all have been varyingly described as separate but similar languages, or distinct dialects of a single mother tongue. Grammatically and in vocabulary, the Astur-Leonese languages share traits with Portuguese, Galician, and Spanish Like most other Romance languages, Leonese first emerged in the tenth century CE from local dialects of Vulgar Latin, and was a language of government and literature, until it was displaced by Spanish in the fourteenth century CE. Though the language remains unrecognized today, the language’s use in media has grown considerably since the 1900s, with literature, music, and online content. José Benito’s variety, the Palra d’El Rebollal, is spoken in the municipalities around the city of Salamanca.

Esto no es leonés, es extremeño, un habla de transición entre el castellano y el asturleonés que se habla en el norte de Extremadura y sur de la provincia de Salamanca. Es un habla que tiene mucho vocabulario leonés pero a día de hoy me parece muy atrevido incluirla dentro de la lengua leonesa. El leonés, como lengua viva sin castellanizar, se habla más al norte, en Miranda de Duero (Portugal), el occidente de las provincias de Zamora y León, y en el principado de Asturias, pero no en Salamanca.

The difference between the accent of my dialect (Northern Wu Chinese) from the center of the city and that from 10km away from downtown is 10x bigger than that between this and Castellano.

Sounds very Castillianized, which wouldn't be a surprise because the two languages are so similar that a slow and almost imperceptible merge with Castillian has been observed in many places.

Portuguese is not a 'spanish language'. Galician is not a 'Spanish' language. Not even Leonese. And not even Castilian. Modern spanish descends from castilian because it was the Kingdom of Castilla which dominated the others (except Portugal). spoken galician, leonese or asturian spoken at the present are probably very simlilar to spoken galician, leonese or asturian of the past; like Galician. Because they remained submerged by the authority of Castilla.

@@renebakker4446 they are referred to as Spanish languages because they are the languages spoken in Spain. All of these languages are technically Spanish by that definition. However the language we know as Spanish that is spoken in Latin America and serves as Spains national language is called Castilian.

@@Monkeymeep Frisian is not Dutch. Hoewever it is spoken (and it is an official language) in the Netherlands. On the other hand, when Castilla, Galicia, or León emerged there wasn't anything existing we know now as 'Spain'. And Portuguese is certainly not a 'Spanish language' by the way. The correct designation is Castilian and not 'Spanish', in any case.

Thats why spain is split into a bunch of autonomous communities. Thats why Portugal and Brazil exist. But they are literally the most similar groups on earth. They are just all hot heads.

La Palra d'El Rebollal no es leonés/llionés, es un dialecto del extremeño/estremeñu, en este caso MUY castellanizado. Evidentemente el leonés y el extremeño están relacionados, pero no son lo mismo.

If you can precise in the description that it is spoken in the leonese region (Leon, Zamora and salamanca) bc we don't identify ourselves as castillans and castilla y leon is killing our language and identity, thanks!

This is Extremaduran, not Leonese per se, however, Extremaduran is sometimes considered both a dialect of Castilian and Leonse, depending on the area

Este tio esta hablando una version de la palra del Rebollal mu castellanizada pero se nota que no es estremeñu por el acento que usa que es mucho mas de meseta. En cualquier caso tanto la palra como el estremeñu se clasifican como dialectos del leones oriental y se parecen mucho entre si, por escrito son casi indistinguibles.

it's similar to portuguese but it's not really from portuguese, because this happens too in cantabrian, asturian and north leonese, which doesn't rlly had a big interaction with portuguese, it's just a different evolution from latin than castillan

The final /u/ is not vowel reduction like in portuguese, but rather a conservative feature (romance masculine /o/ comes from latin /u/).

These are romance languages. For example I am Puerto Rican and I speak perfect Spanish but if you know these romance languages you could basically understand a lot of them as you hear them. For example Catalán, Galatian, etc.

Para ser dl mismo origen q l asturiano no se parece mucho... Cuando se habla dl asturleonés piensas q serán muy similares, pero... N asturiano los masculinos acaban n -u, "perru, gatu", pero nunca n plural, "perros".No hay sonido "jota", "muyer", "xente". Parece q n este dialecto les ha influido l castellano, se parece más a este idioma q al asturiano, curioso...

Porque el asturiano que se conoce mas se corresponde con los dialectos occidentales del asturleones, pero la palra al igual que el cantabru o el estremeñu son dialectos orientales que guardan mucha mas proximidad con el castellano (de hecho el castellano originariamente seria el dialecto mas oriental del tronco iberorromance con influencia añadida del euskera o del romance navarro). Aparte de que el habla una palra muy castellanizada.

His accent is more Castilian. Almost sounds like an Andalusian accent. Northern dialects tend to have a more conspicuous lisp in their pronunciation

Lord Of Woe No no, te equivocas, en el valle del Jerte al español le llaman castellano y luego a esta forma leonesa propia del territorio le llaman el castúo (que viene de la casta) y cuando se refieren a ello hablan de que la gente mayor de antiguamente lo hablaba pero que ahora ya no se habla en Castúo sino más en un castellano con acento extremeño

Finally someone dares to say what we all think. Spaniards are way too caught up trying to differentiate themselves among each other to levels where it's becoming ridiculous, the ending of certain words in "u" or i as in "genti" instead of gente is something done by certain very humble country people here in mexico. My cleaning lady does this "esta pegando la calor muy fuerti" "me encontré un perru re feu". Wikitongues has many regional "languages" from spain but if someone wants to know how someone from rural castile & leon speaks there is not a single video. At this rate with all the separatisms and peripherial nationalisms in spain. "Spanish" will be a language that will live solely on the American continent because this so called "leonese" and "estremeñu" are understandable as of now as just normal spanish with a country accent but after standardization done with the purpose of making it clearly distinct it won't be like that anymore as is the case with "asturiano".

Well it's considered a separate language cuz it didn't develop from spanish. The dialect shown in this video has been very castilianized. In other regions asturleonese sounds different
