The development of a model wind tunnel in the back of the bike shop would have been an interesting sidebar to the Wright Brothers story.😊

Not the very first airplane, or even the first powered flight, but the first "controlled" powered flight. Richard Pearce is usually credited with the first powered flight, 31 March 1903 is noted by historians as the day when Pearse may have achieved some sort of witnessed flight. That was nine months before the Wright brothers. His aircraft rose about 4 or 5 metres in the air and crashed into the top of a hedge about 50 to 100 metres later so could not be called a controlled flight. He later went on to develop many innovations like ailerons, tricycle undercarriage with a steerable nose wheel, and a propeller with variable-pitch blades.

They invented the first successful self-powered airplane, but gliders had already "flown" before the Wrights.
