When he had to rebuild Wilco a number of years ago, Jeff Tweedy took a different approach than most songwriter/bandleaders might have: Rather than hiring super-tasteful professional sidemen with an encyclopedic knowledge of roots music, masters of the appropriate and expected who can absolutely vanish into a song, he hired a couple of the most creative musicians he could find: Nels Cline and Glenn Kotche. I'm not sure why he did that. But he might have wanted guys who could push him out of his comfort zone, and who could take his more non-standard ideas and run with them. And, you can always get off-the-map creative guys to be tasteful. But you can't necessarily get tasteful guys to be off-the-map creative.
