🇦🇱 DAVID’S BEEN HERE ALBANIA SHIRTS: teespring.com/stores/davids-b...
My 14th and final day in Albania kicked off in the beautiful seaside city of Vlore! Join me as I finish up my epic road trip through Albania with some incredible Albanian fish at a unique restaurant and explore ancient Apollonia!
🧳 BALKAN PEARLS TOUR OPERATOR: www.balkanpearls.com/
🚗 RENTAL CAR ALBANIA: / rentalcaralbania
My day started at Bologna Hotel, a boutique hotel by the water on the boardwalk. They have 40 rooms and offer an amazing breakfast. Most of the rooms overlook the sea.
We started with a simple buffet-style breakfast of cheese, sausage, eggs, and some cake.
Then, I headed up to my room, where I had an open space with a king-sized bed, a desk, a nice bathroom, and a stunning view of the water. Downstairs, they also have an amazing lobby and a relaxing area where you can chill and lounge.
Then, we headed to Independence Square, where Albania’s independence was declared on November 28, 1912, and Rruga Justin Godard, or Museum Road. The buildings are new, but they have recreated the style of Old Vlore.
Then, we drove on toward Apollonia, a massive ancient city that used to be home to 60,000 people. Only parts of it have been unearthed. There, you’ll find a theatre, a temple, the bouleuterion, an odeon, housing, columns, shops, and more.
After finding and moving a Hermann’s tortoise from the ancient storehouse, we headed to the monastery. The stones from the floor are from the city in the 3rd century.
St. Mary’s Church was built in the 17th century with stones from archaeological sites. There’s a well and beautifully sculpted columns inside. I could also see some 17th-century frescoes, which were fading.
Inside the church is a large calendar on the floor. The statues here were found in the archaeological park. Some were part of tombs. There’s also some beautiful, massive pottery and Roman statues from the 2nd and 3rd centuries, which are all missing their heads.
Next, we hit the road again and drove to a monastery at the top of a hill. It was built in 282. It’s the wedding place of the national hero, Skanderbeg! Inside are original frescoes and icons. Monks still live there. Mass was taking place while we visited, so we had to be quiet.
Then, we arrived at Restorant Ali Kali. There, we met the owner, Ali, who took me to the kitchen, where I could see fish and prawns grilling over coals.
Ali and the staff are super welcoming. You can eat on a huge terrace outside that gets packed. The thing that makes this place so unique is that Ali serves his customers from horseback!
First, we had some smooth and cold blackberry raki, followed by yogurt sauce with salad, cheese with pickled peppers, fërgesë, and French fries. The cheese with peppers was spicy and super tasty!
Next, Ali served some toasted white bread, which I piled with cheese and peppers and fërgesë. It’s a perfect combination! Then, we had some cheese that had been grilled and some tomatoes.
Then, I saw Ali riding the horse with the clamper full of fish! He served us a monster-sized wild sea bass, which is over 1 kilo! It’s so tasty and the skin is crunchy. After a while, I just dug in with my hands.
Then, they brought us more fish and some grilled shrimp. The meat was like butter. I had to go through it slowly to be careful of the spines. But the meal was so incredible, the restaurant is one of my favorites of all time!
We finished up with fresh yogurt with honey, which was more honey than yogurt! This dish is a staple in the Balkans and one of my favorites.

@Davidsbeenhere Exactly! WILD fish! Such a delicacy you can only DREAM to find in most places in the western world. And just because you do not know how to use fork and knife to debone a fish perfectly without wasting anything, doesnt mean you should go bengali style. But even bengali style with fingers you clearly do not know how to do it, you live much to be desired watching you how you treated that fish picking it up from the plate to look like a piece of a rotten cloth. Even in benghali people do not treat food like this or waste any food especially in these difficult times but first of all you need to know how to value and respect the country that given you this opportunity, nature, culture and the food. Ive seen so many of your videos in albania and other countries, what i've noticed is that you've passed through albanian history, you barely touched your own curiosity to ask the guy beside you that he proudly keep talking passionately rightfully so about such an old and amazing history. I can only see excitment in you when is about restaurants to go to eat or drink alcohol to satisfy your own greed, i never heard in any of your video for you to ask "what is the history of this dish" this is how you know the culture of the people that serve you there. I reccomand that you take some notice from an english couple called "from rust to road", watch how they describe with their simplicity the REAL life of albania not just some luxurious resorts that you go and indulge yourself with eating and drinking pretending you provide such a great service. It was gonna be very nice to speak with the same passion about those rare relics their beauty and history behind that the county has to offer not just your personal momentary gluttony. You have to represent the hard life that these people are living everyday too, so we that are living in western world can do more to help that country and people who go through hardships everyday just to produce that food that you take it for granted. Also a personal tip learn when you eat to keep your mouth closed because is annoying , and secondly use the right words inside the context and dont say "ooh this is ridiculuous" for things that are beautiful because you truly sound ridiculous. And for us as tourists show the prices and bills as they are, if you want to make it educational, because yes they are beautiful but to increase the number of tourists you have to be true and honest.

David, Scanderbeg did not fail, on the contrary he was a rare successful instance of resistance by Christians during the 15th century. For a quarter century he defeat the ottomans repeatedly and only after his death they managed to invade Arberia (present day Albania). He is regarded as one of the greatest military commanders of all time. With a maximum number of about 10,000-15,000 soldiers he was able to defeat ottoman armies counting 100,000 -200,000 soldiers.

It's not that Skenderbeg failed david the sultan himself said that the Balkans lost their sword and shield when Skenderbeg died. The holy roman empire and pope at the time sent a crusader army to finally get rid of the ottomans but the pope died on the mid crusader army's march and the new pope and holy roman empire with the rest of europe turned their backs on skenderbeg and the Balkans. And it is because of Skenderbeg and the Albanian rebellion that the entirety of Europe didn't fall to Ottoman rule.

Caesar Augustus or Julius Caesar's nephew " Octavius " the same person, (23 September 63 BC - 19 August AD 14) was the first Roman emperor, reigning from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. Fun Fact: Octavius was studying and undergoing military training in Apollonia, Illyria, when Julius Caesar was killed on the Ides of March (15 March) 44 BC.

the fish is nothing compare to peppers pickled in ricotta cheese, trust me, I know what I'm talking, just have to be Albanian ricotta cheese, u can drink the entire bottle of Raki which is 40%+ prove, n stay sober, the ricotta cheese is made with fermented yogurt n salt to balance the sourness, the salt n sourness together neutralize the alcohol effect, Albanian historically are known as warm drinkers, that's y they have so many pickled vegetables, made in so many ways, when 2 men sit on the table to drink, the table should have what we call meze, plates with greasy meat , dairy food that meets the requirements of meze such as salty sour taste, or pickled vegetables

@@vagelisloukas9347 Wikipedia is payed by Greecs politics to distort the true Albanian history, again with the false Greek history, we are Illyrians the oldest people in the Balkans since 5000 years ago, the Greeks came later from Egypt and stole the Balkans, and on our Illyrian history and on our ancient civilizations the Greeks built their false history with one language invented by the Romans for the Greeks, the Greeks until 1912 spoke Albanian as the primary language with the autochthonous Arvanites, so do not tell us false stories invented by the Greek politician, when the Illyrians were in the Balkans, Greece did not exist

@@eagleland7036 You are the oldest people in the Balkan ? only in your mind , and this is your real problem because you Know it. Tell me in Apolonia 5th century BC , in all the scripts what is the language ? which language in all your videos is not mentioned and you do not show any scripts at all ,instead you try to show that Apolonia as a Roman creation (Romans took Apolonia after 3rd century BC ) In 1912 -1913 is the creation of Albania state for first time in history because Italy wanted a country that was easy to manipulate on the other side of Italian penisula . Before the 1912 Albania is not mentioned in all Europe and the Europian states did not concider that a new state may created in the Area , now the Illirian destiny is another story and most of the Historian they dont conect the Ilirian language with the Albanian which is spoken now .As a new state in 1913 you had to invent something to explain your destiny .Even your national hero CASTRIOTIS , SKENDEBERG was the Son of a Slavic mother and he revolt against Othoman Empire as a Cristian not as Albanian . The Romans did not invented Greek language ,instead the Latin language is based on the ancient Greek alphabet of the Kimian (People fron the city of KIMI ).All those facts have been proved by Argeologist a long time now .Also it is a Fact that Greek civilization and Language existed in the Balkan area and in mediteranian - aegean area since the 17th BC (see MINOAN - SANTORINY - Mycenaean civilization ETC) So I advice you to stop created HISTORIC facts from your mind AND BECOME REDICOLOUS.

Appolonia was established by people of Corinth and Corfu. The first name of the city was Gylax from the name of the person who founded (Γύλακας). You dont have to be ashamed for your history but to steal from other peoples. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollonia_(Illyria)
