Vintage fiberglass fly rods, wild brown trout, a PMD hatch, and a high desert trout stream in Oregon combine in a symphony of simplicity. A day of easy-going fly fishing simplicity is complimented with an equally easy-going video: no music, minimal editing, self-filmed, and no asks for "like and subscribe." I hope you will enjoy this afternoon on the water with me.

Really enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing. I have a 7’9” Shakespeare Wonderod in my basement that’s needed some broken guides replaced since I picked it up at a thrift store several years ago. Your H-I Rainbow restoration may just inspire me to actually tackle the project

Thanks for the comment! That Wonderod is too special to be collecting dust! That rod has been on my bucket list for a while now. Re-wrapping is not that hard and you don't need fancy equpuipment. I use a coffee cup to hod the thread and a heavy book as a thread tensioner. Go for it. If you don't like the results you can strip it back off and do it again.

Enjoyed the rods, the location and your video. More vintage fiberglass content would be appreciated. Nice job on the rod restoration. I have a Phillipson made Abercrombie & Fitch 7.5' rod and an older H-I as well that I am going to rehab one day.

Thank you for the comment and the sub! Oh man, those rods sound awesome. That A&F sounds like a real treat. Holler at me if you ever make it out to Idaho and we will put a bend in them all.

Ted Williams,baseball great and iconic fly fisherman who taught a great many youngsters like me to cast and double haul way back in the day,told us when walking through thickets to carry the rods by holding the grips and reels close to us with the rods trailing behind,less chance of breaking the tips.Tight lines.

That's a great tip. Thank you. I agree that is generally a good way to do it and a very good rule of thumb. I probably do that 50% of the time. I kind of "read" the thicket and decide which way to carry the rod. In my experience, some thickets will cause little branches to get between the tip and the line if you carry with the tip trailing which can cause problems too. Either way requires a bit of paying attention to the surroundings.

I got my first 'newfangled' fiberglass fly rod for my 12th birthday in 1969 (Fenwick 6 wt 7' 4pc pack rod) in the fancy, modern aluminum tube to replace the Granger 9' ~6 wt bamboo that was handed down to me by my Granddad. I was stylin'! Still have it and fish it today with a DT4 now, 6 wt always seemed too much of a line for the little wand, but worked for small streams on a short line cast). I pick up every rebuildable glass rod that I can find at thrift stores and yard sales. Great for initial training for newbies with the slow tempo casting action compared to graphite. I like graphite for what I call 'technical' fly fishing, but there really is nothing like a calm, relaxing day on the water with a vintage glass rod (or bamboo for that matter). They all have their charms.

What wt rods?
@selfmedicatedrec7361
@selfmedicatedrec7361 Жыл бұрын
Great question. I should have mentioned that in the video, huh? The Philipson is a 6 wt. The HI doesn't have a line designation printed on it but in my hand a #5 line is the sweet spot. Hence the reason I use it for dries and the Philipson for nymphs.

I think you're right on the money with the H-I Mohawk because I have a H-I Woodsman #1210 7 ft 6 in power glass rod and that is a 5 wt rod also. It was made between 1950-1954 and I find that a WF4F works fine on it. Makes a great rod for small streams. Also Horrocks-Ibbotson was made in Utica, NY.@@selfmedicatedrec7361
