How do you remove the ashes from the stove if you need to keep the fire going? When you phone and headlamp went dead you needed the Biolite stove and a solar portable panels or a bigger back up portable battery charger.

Hi Cess, I don't plan to keep it going overnight so this will not be an issue for me. Yes, interesting function on the Biolite, but it does not come with a chimney. Would be good to have it on a stove for heating.

Great video. One tip for winter camping, use a pulk or toboggan to pull your gear over the snow. It makes your life easier and allows you to haul a little more gear. For firewood, I usually bring some dry construction grade wood from home to get my first fire going. This allows me to process firewood that is damp and then dry it out on the stove surface to keep the fire going. How are you like that Helsport Pasvik Lavvu? I take it you have the 4-6 model.

Thanks bwillan! Yes, would be great to try a pulk sometime, I do see how it would enable me to carry more stuff. However, on the hikes I've done so far, they usually include some sections of pretty steep climbing where I think a pulk would be a little difficult to operate. I tend to want to climb a bit, looking for a camp site with a view... Bringing some dry wood would definitely be a good idea to get some embers going and make the rest easier. But the wood I found this time was so wet that it was difficult to have the fire going even after I got some good embers. Have been studying a bit now on how to find dry(er) firewood, so hope to do better next time! I choose the Helsport much because I already had another Helsport tent that has served me very well through the years, so was expecting good quality again, which seems to be right so far. It is also light enough to carry (5 kg). One thing I would however have liked is a dedicated hole for the stove pipe on the side of the tent. That would have enabled a tighter fit, a shorter stove pipe and to place the stove closer to a wall instead of center placement, allowing everyone in the tent to watch the fire and creating more usable space.

Do you find it difficult or worrisome that that damper part of the stove pipe is permanently affixed to the top piece of the stove, sticking up? That seems like it would be bent/wrinkled/damaged very easily when trekking with lots of gear. Do you have to be super careful of that part and make sure nothing ever lays on top of it while travelling? Is there any way to disattach it and put it back on when assembling?

Yes that did bother me a bit. The whole thing is of course fragile, being so incredibly lightweight. I put the bag with the stove on top of my backpack, so far so good...
