I retired from a Illinois County Sheriff’s Office. There was many times when your backup was 20 minutes or more away. We relied on small towns many times for backup. The inmates are running the asylum.

The legislature is openly hostile to cops. That "police reform" law they passed only accelerated retirements and cops leaving for other states because it makes being one so much more difficult. They can barely afford to pay patrol deputies where I am and have high turnover. I know a few cops with two jobs. Hiring standards are WAYYY lower now. They also jacked up ISP this year by restructuring it. The troop that patrols my county has like 7 other counties to patrol so there's usually max only one trooper in my county unless they're conducting some sort of operation like raiding a meth dealer. ISP is treated the same way as the Marines - "Do more with less."

Between March 2023 and 2024 I have developed a new 'abnormality' so MRIs every 3 months - for life. Hopefully Trooper Kody will suffer no new issues. He is probably anxious to return to work but only time will tell if that is approved. His well-being is paramount! He is tough! Making his way to his vehicle probably saved his life. Time is usually detrimental when dealing with a TBI.

Isn’t great with providing context so: Illinois State Police released video on Tuesday that shows the horrific moment a state trooper was allegedly shot by a Chicago man last week in downstate Springfield. On Oct. 24, at about 10:47 p.m., ISP Trooper Dakotah Champman-Green stopped Cristobal Santana in the 1600 block of Toronto Road. During the stop, video shows Santana get out of the vehicle and exchange gunfire with Trooper Chapman-Green. Police say Santana fired at least 10 shots and that the officer was struck several times. Santana also allegedly beat Chapman-Green, causing facial fractures, a skull fracture, and a brain bleed. Santana fled the scene but was taken into custody a few hours later around 2 a.m. Further video shows Santana was struck by a police vehicle during his apprehension.

There seems to be some confusion, and while some of this may be inaccurate or out of date, I’m trying to piece it together the best I can for you. Also, this is all “allegedly” 24 y/o Officer Dakota Chapman Green vs 37 y/o Cristobal Santana. The traffic stop took place almost 48 hours after the Chicago-area killing of the 37-year-old elementary school teacher(and special education specialist), Adrianna Lopez. Lopez and Santana dated for about a year and a half and broke up approximately 3 months prior to him shooting and striking her 10 times! 2 years prior Santana was in New Orleans and was abusing his then girlfriend Erika. He punched her in the left eye and broke her arm, and was abusive during their relationship. He was also abusive to Lopez in Chicago where he also Punched her in the eye and broke her ribs. At one point police took his Glock, but months later gave it back to him. During the stop, Officer Dakota(Kody) Chapman Green was shot at 10 times by Santana and struck multiple times in the leg(bullets), then chased down. When Kody fell, Santana used his gun to beat him in the face, causing fractures and a brain bleed(not bullets, physical hits). When they say he was arrested the next day, it’s because… the traffic stop was 10/24/23 @10:47pm, and they found him and were able to detain him around 1:57am on 10/25/23. So while it was the “next day”, it was only 3 hours and 10 minutes later. Santana was stopped at a gas station and in a rush decided to attempt to flee into the dark on foot, where he chose to play chicken with a patrol car and was decentralized. Kody was released from the hospital after two weeks and will return to work, the suspect was still in the hospital when Kody was released.

I understand why singles are utilized, the cost of having doubles and even having two officers in close proximity to each other when patrolling is significant. However, what is officer safety worth? If he had a partner, or had backup within a reasonable distance, this might have ended much differently. I'm genuinely kinda frustrated that he wasn't able to get the better of this guy. You look at his criminal record and nothing about him says, "valuable member of society" and yet the officer is the one fighting for his life in the hospital.
