A playthrough Nintendo's 1985 light gun game for the NES, Wild Gunman.
I play all three game modes in this video:
0:06 Game A: 1 Outlaw, ending at Round 61
16:48 Game B: 2 Outlaws, ending at Round 21
22:37 Game C: Gang, ending at Round 13
Wild Gunman is one of my favorite NES black box games. It's as simple and as addictive as Duck Hunt ever was, no matter who might mock it for being a baby's toy.
Remember the gun duel scene in Back to the Future Part III? I can't help but to think that Wild Gunman might have influenced that scene, especially after the arcade machine makes a cameo appearance at the Cafe 80s in Part II.
For as repetitive as it is, it makes for some surprisingly tense moments as you sit there waiting to lay into that loud Zapper trigger. As a kid I used to psych myself out trying to anticipate the shot, and usually I'd end up getting a game over because I'd keep jumping the gun.
Here's a trick that took me years to figure out, but it makes the game so much easier: focus all of your attention on the timer at the top of the screen, and hit the trigger the instant it changes from zero. It takes all of the ambiguity out of trying to read the timing of the bad guys' animations, and I find that when I do that I can usually win with no problem. The instant you lose your focus, though, good luck.
Wild Gunman is a fun test of reflexes gussied up as a gaudy western, it's a pop culture icon, and it's one of my favorite reminders of the NES's early days.
(And did you know that Wild Gunman is actually a video game adaptation of a mechanical gun game created by Gunpei Yokoi back in the mid 70s?)
FAIYAA! pow

I miss Zapper games, also you probably know that but in the Japanese famicom version, the Zapper is a Revolver complete with a holster. So the whole point of this Wild Gunman game is that you supposed to quickdraw from your holster. How cool is that?

So, as a kid, I never got to play many games that were compatible with the NES Zapper peripheral. Like this game, *_"Duck Hunt_* , and *_"Gumshoe"_* . I *_DID_* play a lot of SNES Super Scope games (I have lots of memories with *_"Yoshi Safari"_* in particular). I constantly hear this game getting immense praise from NES aficionados, and looking at it, I can definitely see why. This is the epidimy of classic Zapper action. Happy New Year.

One of the best NES shooters. Very fun game, though dark if you think about it. I personally like this much more than Duck Hunt. Too bad you NEED a CRT TV to play this in original hardware.
