I visited the Monkey House in 1955 as a five year old, I have a few pictures of it somewhere, just a stone hut then. One of the highlights of my youth.

It fascinates me how the British were able to keep that rock from Spain.

Wessel Westdorp That's not really accurate. Pretty much for the majority of history England and then later Britain has been more powerful than the Spanish. Britain also maintained the largest and best trained fleet on planet earth during a time when naval power meant absolute power. Following the defeat of Napoleon and the British empires golden age began, it was simply downright foolishness for a European power to seriously consider standing up to Britain's territorial claims. Not to mention, Britain defeated Spain for the Rock and lawfully it was handed over. For all of Spains later whining it is British Land.

Intelligent things? So ignorant "The Treaty of Utrecht, also known as the Peace of Utrecht or the Treaty of Utrecht-Rastatt, is, in fact, a set of treaties signed by the antagonist states in the War of Spanish Succession between 1713 and 1715 in the Dutch city of Utrecht and in the German Rastatt. The treaties put an end to the war, although after his signature continued hostilities in Spanish territory until July 1715, at which time the Marquis of Asfeld took the City of Mallorca. In this treaty Europe changed its political map." Now the only trick is to make it a fiscal paradise, accept drug entries and send thousands of tons of contraband tobacco to Spain. The usual trick. Do all the illegalities possible. A cave more than English pirates in the world.

@Wessel Westdorp 'Strong empires such as the Netherlands, Austria, France and Portugal'? Learn history you fool. The British empire was way 'stronger' than any of them.... in fact all of them put together and then some

They’re “professional pick pockets” who are not criminalized for it because they’re the main attraction? Riddle me this, if they EVER stop being the “main tourist attraction” will monkey prisons be formed? Will they be arrested and charged? I’m so confused. 😩

Feeding these animals allows them to be healthier and therefore they can more successfully raise more babies. Which contributes to a population problem. And more raids on tourists. It's never a good idea for wild animals to perceive humans as a source for food.

They are dangerous and should be removed and returned to their original place of origin prior to 1704 and recalculated to be completely wild thus not dependent on humans! To keep them dependent is to keep them on the brink of extinction……an animal is not enjoyed if it only exists in a cage (a/k/a, an isolated island or rock).
