Wild Mustang From Bidding To 1st Ride - Challis Idaho BLM Horse Herd

This has been the most challenging horse I’ve ever started. He’s taught me patience and I’ve taught him not to fear me.
Wild Bureau of land management (BLM) horses aka Mustangs are some of the smartest, most sure footed and toughest breed of horses you could ride.
They require many hours of time and patience to gain their trust and allow you to have a working partnership, but once you’ve gained their trust they will be a lifelong partner in the trail.
We first started with simple time in the with Cowboy. He eventually became comfortable with us being in with him and even started to take food from our hands.
We were stuck at the feeding out of our hand stage for weeks, before he eventually allowed the fists touch on his nose. Although brief, it made a lasting impression on us both.
The feelings surging through your body as you have your first touch are unexplainable. The ribs of emotions from touching a once wild animal born and raised on the mountain is amazing.
The light brief touches when in for another few weeks before my wife eventually got him to allow her to touch his neck. Another amazing accomplishment for both horse and trainer.
We stalled at this stage for months. Even roping him and teaching him to lead, but still not allowing more that a quick touch to the nose or neck.
We finally had to get help from a good friend and horse trainer Mike. He used his well trained pickup horse to rope Cowboy and pet him all over while safely atop of his horse.
This was the breakthrough we needed! After that one evening he then allowed us to slowly work further down his body each day. Within a week we were touching his entire body and even allowed us to trim his front feet.
From there we worked on lunging, more petting, grooming and sacking out with feed backs and saddle pads.
Once he showed us that he was ready for the saddle, we saddled him up for the first time. He took it really well and only had one minor blowup.
We then saddled him 3-4 more times. Each time doing something new such as adding weight to the stirrups and working on backing up.
On the 4th time being saddled, I added pack saddles with two empty five gallon buckets. He lunged fine with the added weight and pressure.
From there we added about 20lbs of rocks to each bucket on each side. The sound they made when we lunged him caused him to blowup briefly again. Although it was shorter that the first blowup it indeed reminded us to take things slow with a wild horse.
After he calmed down I decided to throw a leg over the saddle. He took it so well, that we decided to backup and disengage the hind quarters. Passing that with flying colors, I asked him to go forward.
As you can see in the video, he did amazing for his first ride with no really problems or rodeo. This does not mean he is ready and broke to go ride all the time, but it is a step direction.
We will continue to ride him and put miles on him. I am sure there will be issues that arise including spooking and possibly even bucking as we are still not out of the woods for that.

It’s always been my dream to adopt and train mustangs. When I was 14 I bought my first horse, a domestic untouched two year old stud. Trained him myself. After training him got a job working other people’s horses and training them. Ended up having a kid and having to sell my baby four years after having him. Now four years later, I’m BLM approved and in three days I’m hopeful my two bids win and I can start gentling the beautiful mustangs. A four year old black who will be my main focus on finishing, and a beautiful soral who is two, who will mostly be worked ground work for a year or two until his growth plates are fully closed. I’m beyond excited and videos like this one make me so happy!!

@@RobinsFamilyHomestead I grew up on a Goshute reservation in Tooele Utah. We harvested mustang colts right out of our own wild herd and broke them as cow ponies. My grandfather didn't like the term "broke". He preferred to say "gentled them". This video brought me back to those days. I noticed a lot of negative comments. Don't listen to them. Whatever videos you make, there are always going to be a certain amount of haters. Just keep making them your way. I think your wife has a lovely voice and you did a tremendous job. I have a question. I’ve seen many horses that can be ridden without a bit. What do you think about that trend? I’m really wanting to know. When I was younger we had 9 horses and bits were common, but looking back on that, it seems that maybe we were hurting horses unnecessarily. So I’m feeling some guilt nowadays So man6 things in horsemanship are changing, and for the better it seems. This was a wonderful video. Thank you.

@@carolynstewart8465 It means they didn't get enough rain for their pastures and hay fields. Farmers and ranchers in my location had so little rain their hay production was down to about 20 % of the normal supply so a lot of cattle had to be sold and some people had to sell their entire herds because there wasn't enough feed for their livestock. Any hay that was for sale was usually priced about three times as much as normal, so the market price for sold cattle didn't make it affordable to buy hay to keep them through the winter ( if they could even find enough hay to buy).

Im GLAD to see the guy wearing a HELMET to ride!! so many just dont!! i know a guy who insisted on wearing just a felt cowboy hat when riding his safe older horse, the horse stumbled or spooked once and the guy was thrown into a metal panel railing and incurred a head injury...brain damage, and never recovered fully...is now permanently compromised... otherwise, i wd eliminate those excess loose reins, horse could get front feet caught up in them while fritzing out during training and cause a wreck n injury to horse or rider. and when doing more videos could u put the dogs in the barn so we can focus on the horse/rider instead of all those dog commands; thnx.

Four different excuses in four replies for a completely unnecessary, counter productive indulgence of dogs, that is compounded by various other problems, including : the distraction of the camera operator and the near constant overly- interactive voiceover defect meaning, imo, an interactive style not suitable for the key first training sessions under saddle, talking with multiple serial barnyard specimens, including the horse (who she doesn’t that I noticed, directly state or ‘afford’ a name to even when praising the “good boy” hell out of him, check the name of this vid as f you don or won’t believe me,…. …..so, ithis imposed state by the mom person of inconclusory reward system, from somebody with apparent status within the family, is both distracting to the horse, emotionally impactful, and which won’t at all reinforce to the intelligent , special and brave Spanish mustang/ newest member of the farm family, (who is indubitably the whole reason the camera is there in this way, that he is the one being praised, and or, that he has as much distinctiveness as the rest of the family, whose various names are liberally applied as needed to ensure that 😔any other 😒Instrictions ffgor said parties must be readily appreciated to apply specifically to that named entity!! Do this horse is not being asked to work with only the trainer handler/ key resources person, but under the watchful but intermittent scrutinized by and control of the mom- guy. But other than the hat it looks like a great project, you have acquired some pretty serious equin capacity there and seem to have at least a modicum of innate ability to connect with this horse and be liked by him. Sometimes you need to just lock up the fogs the mom and the game all n the barn and have your own day. Fixing the end part of the vid here, where your ‘standing together like good friends’ portrait is totally covered by a thumbnail for another video about goats or something is also on my wish list for your video. If there weren't lobbyists, there wouldn't be as big of a problem as they claim! Natural selection and a small bit of roundups would allow our wild mustangs to rove free! Even though he does not have a round pen , he seems to get the job done! in fact he would definetly make it on your ranch that you dont own he owns his place more likely, he would make it on the ranch mate because you have to have all the round pen etc I was surprised at how well the horse travelled around him on his 12 ft rope lead!!! nice saddle too!! I start horses, brumbys (australian version of mustang) and personally I dont want heaps of kids bikes chickens and dogs around when Im stepping up on one but having said that this mustang has to get used to all this. its his new enviroment! you cowboys must be bored boring cowboys if you get thrills out of laughing at someone doing things differently to you! This guy has a happy supporting family probably something you will never acheive. Jerk !

What an annoying voiceover!!!! When starting a Horse. It should be as quiet as possible. Not with people or kids, Dogs, Chickens, Motorcycles, Or someone constantly hollering at Kids, Dogs or whatever. Time is your best friend, Not annoying noise, Ground work will do miracles!! keep everyone and thing not needed away! It does make the horse confused! You should want your horse to be able to trust you, And you him! You may not like this comment. No problem, he's your horse, Not mine. I just added some advise is all.
