Our 5 different Wild Plum trees are fruiting! Well, the Beach Plum hasn’t fruited yet :/. We look at all 5 plum trees, and talk about their characteristics.
Wild Plums have been eaten by humans since the Neolithic age (10,000 years ago). Cultivated Plums have been developed for the last 2,000 years.
There are 15 Wild Plum trees native to North America (heppy.org/wild)! There’s a Wild Plum trtee that fits YOUR yard, patio, etc. They grow in hot and cold climates, are highly adaptable, more disease resistant and more drought tolerant than cultivated varieties. Wild Plum trees are our native American treasures.

About HEPPY™
in 2017 I started planting on a 2 acre abandoned property. We’re located only 10 miles south of the US Capitol but are surrounded by several hundred acres of forest and few homes. Our urban garden design, landscape architecture and permaculture techniques incorporate fruiting trees, fruiting shrubs, edible ground cover, edible flowers, and herbs and medicinal plants that will provide food for generations. It’s a long and slow ‘haul’ as we adapt, learn new things, and are (usually ;) enjoying the process.
HEPPY™ and HEPPY Lifestyle™ is about Quality of Life (QOL). It’s a lifestyle YOU deserve, and YOU can do.
QOL is permaculture to grow and eat nutritious food. QOL is physical exercise and physical health. It’s mental health to include rest, meditation, enjoyment of nature, and working at what makes you passionate. It’s about being creative, artistic and INVENTIVE. And, HEPPY emphasizes financial health by creating passive income, being self-sustaining and finding best value! It’s a lifestyle that will work for YOU!

Great subject matter (the Plums) but crappy presenter. That guy needs more coffee ;). (Uhmmmm, does coffee grow in zone 7!?!?!?!) There's 15 Wild Plum trees native to North America and some are tall and some are short; they tolerate full-sun or little sun; tolerates virtually any soil; 14 of 15 self-pollinate; GREAT for wildlife food and habitat; and some need virtually NO pruning. A Wild Plum tree of North America fits ANY yard!

I already have the Chickasaw Plum and started to research others but most of the resources I came across said that wild plums get diseases easily and there's only a handful that are tasty and fit for human consumption and others are best for the wild. Thank you for educating us on these wild plums, I will gives these a try and see which ones will do well in my zone 8a growing zone.

yup, me too; i read negative things about taste. i read the Creek was virtually unedible. but it's a cherry-sized plum that tastes ... like plum (sorta :). are wild plum as good as cultivars? NO WAY. but these girls are native and the fruit is OK, once ripe. i do spots on the fruit (but it's humidy Maryland). aphids in spring. otherwise, we're good. the Beach Plum stood out to me -- amazingly good looking, healthy. not a spot on any leaf. slow to fruit, apparently :/ the latter is in support of your research, and thanks for being on-board with these beauties!

When I was in college I'd buy native plums (IDK the cultivar) from the Lawrence, KS farmers market and make plum pie. It was delicious.

@juliosdiy3206 stark bros Native plum should have had a species name; maybe an American Plum (it's most common). Anywho, glad you stopped by, and good luck with the japanese plums!

I live in Texas, southeast Texas. There was a plum in someone's yard that produced copious amounts of large black fruit that was dark red and so sweet and juicy under the skin. I figured if it were dried it might make an excellent prune... But it was so sweet, so juicy, and tasted so good. The tree wasn't huge, but larger than 6 feet tall and wide, I would say. A lot of the fruit dropped on the sidewalk, even thought the tree was behind a 6' fence with limbs hanging over the fence. Any ideas what kind that was? I have been looking for that kind for a long time. I know it would make excellent plum jelly.

i'm gripped by your description! BTW, the 2-3 very rare Wild Plum trees are from Texas. however, a plum with black fruit (am guessing, it's on the inside) isn't something i read about. TX has the Texas Persimmon; however, from what i read, it's not sweet. IF your plant zone is 8 or higher -- especially zone 9-10, then she may have been a tropical sorta fruit. LOTS of tasty topical fruits we've likely never heard of. the blackness will narrow things down; VERY few fruits with black flesh. let me know if you figure it out! and thanks for stopping by!

It cant be a plum if its by it self otherwise it could be European plum they can produce by itself.
