I've inherited scarves from my Uncle who was a cowboy. Recently, he passed around Thanksgiving unfortunately, so he never got the chance to show me how to tie em. I'm glad you could help me with different knots and can't wait to wear em in his honor ❤ Carry a photo of him in and wherever I go.

I love my wild rags... I wear them all year around. Nice to have on hot days on the trails, dipped in the creek and tied loosely for a refreshing cool effect. In winter they feel so cozy tied more snuggly against the cold winds and sleet up here in the North Woods of Wisconsin. Another great video. Thank you!

We don't wear them in south Texas or other thick brush would catch and kill a cowboy. Cotton works better down here and they are most often kept in a shirt pocket.

These silk wild rags are essential gear for me. I wear them all the time. In the winter, I equate the warming effect of a wild rag as about equal to wearing another jacket. They're amazing. In the warm weather, I still like to wear them, but tie them much more loosely, usually with a Buckaroo knot. I probably have 10 of them, and they get used.

I have to be honest: I’ve been working with horses outdoors in North Texas for almost five years now and had never heard of a “wild rag” until about a week ago. I’ve been using cotton bandannas in the summer and wool scarves in winter, but a silk wild rag seems like it would serve for both summer and winter. Does it matter much what sort of silk they’re made from? Yours look like a shiny, finished silk; would a raw silk serve just as well?
@ellistonequinesolutions3795
@ellistonequinesolutions3795 2 жыл бұрын
Kenneth, Good input and questions. I have never wore a raw silk material. I just normally pick up a wild rag from a vender booth at a cowboy event or a western store. All of them are finished silk. They are wonderful to wear in the heat or winter. Most of the time I only wear one in the cold months cause they are warm. If I was in your boots, I would definitely give one a try. I am sure that you can google them on line and find a great one. Cheers-TE

Hi Travis, interesting video, very much I enjoyed the demonstration. Suggestion, when capturing a video ALWAYS have your camera horizontal. Watching your video is like looking through a keyhole or wearing horse blinders; the left and right sides are cut off. Every TV screen, movie theater screen, computer monitor screen, and the like, are in a horizontal format. Thus, when capturing a video, you want your images filling the screen left and right; horizontal camera provides it. Also, we see our world more horizontal than vertical. Hope this helps you and other KZbin content creators.

In really hot climates two cotton bandanas can save your life. Soak both rags in cool water. Tie one around your forehead, the other around your neck. When they dry out repeat soaking. It'll help keep your body cool. Heat stroke is pure hell and could kill you.

might want to correct your time frame. Rags were worn by some Vaqueros in the early 1800's and became more popular in the late 1860's on cattle drives. yes, 1880 is when silk became more popular, but wild rags exsited long before 1880.

Travis, I have an issue when wearing my Rag [the first method you showed] where it spins around my neck throughout the day, is there a way you tie that to keep it centered?
@ellistonequinesolutions3795
@ellistonequinesolutions3795 2 жыл бұрын
Darien, They're are several factors that can be causing that. I have noticed that when that happens to me it is because I have tied it to loose or I have beard stubble and that it normally turns in the direction that I always look. Most of the time the knot slips to my right, due to me always looking that direction over my shoulder. To mitigate the chance of that happening. I just tighten the knot folds closer to my neck. This will cut down the percentage of it wanting to rotate. Unfortunately nothing that I know will 100 percent stop the rotation. IT is just something that you live with. Cheers- TE

@jackslapp9073

The only sure fix to keep it from spinning around your neck is to tuck the V inside your shirt. I usually put the bandana or wild rag on before putting my shirt on. The shirt will help hold it in place. You can leave the V inside the shirt and pull the knotted part outside the shirt at the throat. That is, if you wear the wild rag with the double wrap around and V in front of the throat. If you wear it with the V in back, outside the shirt, and just tie the ends in front, you can pull the two ends under the button downed portion of a collar. If you have a button-down collar. Of course, having it spin around so that the V hangs in front and the knot in back wasn't unusual either. That is where you want it when using it as a dust mask. Or, in some cases, as a bib. A third option for a bandana or wild rag is to put it on before the shirt with the V in back, tie the knot, then put your shirt on and pull the knotted ends out at the throat of the shirt. That is the most secure method. Wearing it inside the shirt kept the rough wool or sweaty cotton of the shirt collar off the neck. And, still insulates in winter. In cooler weather, if you wear a vest, jacket, or coat for outer wear, that will help hold the bandana or wild rag in place when wearing it outside the shirt with the V in back, but under the vest or jacket. Some folks, when wearing it outside the shirt will also tuck the tied ends between the top two buttons of the shirt to help prevent it from spinning and to keep the ends out of their coffee cup. Or, once the knot is tied, tuck one end inside the shirt at the throat and bring it back out under the top button and tie a second knot with the other end, then tuck both ends inside the shirt. (Hopefully I got all that said right.)

I am not very familiar with horses. What emergency would require me to blindfold a horse?
@ellistonequinesolutions3795
@ellistonequinesolutions3795 2 жыл бұрын
Here are some examples, sometimes when shoeing a nervous horse you can put a blindfold on a horse and it will calm down. When a barn is on fire and the horse can see the flames you can put a blindfold on to remove that sensory from the horse and lead them to safety without them being hyped up. In the old days, cowboys would blind fold a green horse when mounting in order to safely get on one before a horse got wise to what was happening. You can also blindfold a horse before administrating shots or drawing blood. I hope these examples help you. Cheers- TE
