Back in October, Jen and I set out on an adventure to get some fishing in, but also to try to view and take photos of the annular solar eclipse .
We drove into the Oregon Outback in search of a good spot to camp and take in the eclipse. We settled on a nice river valley tucked up in the hills. The fishing was really fun and consistent for beautiful wild redband trout. Some calamities occurred but overall, we had a great time. I can't wait to get back and explore the area more.
Most of the fishing was Euro Nymphing or tight line nymphing. I go into some detail on the setup that I am using in the video, so look for that. Gear wise, the rod is a Sage ESN 3wt paired with a Hatch 4+ reel spooled with a specific Euro Nymph line from Rio. Links to each below:

If you didn't have any bad luck, you would have no luck at all LOL. It looks like you powered on through and defeated the bad luck and managed to have a pretty good time anyway though. Thanks for taking us along, I had a great time watching.

Awesome trip, looks like a beautiful river to fish, I think the eclipse pictures came out good with the clouds.

Thank you so much! Yeah I totally agree. The clouds added a layer of texture and an air of drama. Thanks for watching.

I live near here, love this river. Large mouth bass on the lower part. I hardly ever run into anyone while fishing the upper part. The eclipse in town was even worse we missed it totally because of the thick clouds.

Oh no! Yeah we only barely got to see it. That is a lovely little river to have as your home water. Cheers!

I was able to hit up this river in the early spring and it was a bit high and blown out, so my success was non-existent but man what a lovely area it was.

Yeah, it's really beautiful out there. When it's in good shape, the fishing can be amazing. I had similar results as you.

Great video! Started playing with Euro nymphing a year so ago. Picked a Echo shadow ll, been pretty happy with it.

Great stuff! Love the music and great scenery. We had decent viewing, albeit with some haze and occasional clouds, from the Service Creek area on the John Day. Zero’d on the venison but brought in a decent smallmouth. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much! We worked pretty hard on the music for this one. Glad you enjoyed it. Dang, now I want to go fish on the John Day! It’s been a while since I have. Cheers!

Great pictures of the eclipse and as always nice video! I love that you use a 3wt a lot. I have one myself and really want to start using it more this up coming season. Thank you.

Thank you so much! Yeah, I’m a big fan of 3wts. I also love fishing in places where a 3wt is the perfect rod. Cheers!

As a first time viewer, just want to say how much I enjoyed this video. The shots of the area (including "simple" things like rocks) where incredible. You really captured the beauty of your surroundings. The background music perfectly matched the vibe of the video too! Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to future videos!

Thank you! I put a fair amount of work in these videos and it’s really rewarding to hear when people enjoy them. Also my wife and I make all of the music for these, so it’s extra nice when folks enjoy that aspect of these videos. Cheers!

Great stuff! I recently purchased a Clearwater 10’ 3wt, really enjoy a bit more reach, I bought it as a multi purpose rod for the MF of the Snoqualamie.

That's awesome. Thanks for sharing. Agreed on the longer reach. It makes this style of nymphing a very engaging way of working certain stretches of water. Also, that's an awesome river. I haven't fished that one in a while.

I run an Orvis Clearwater 2 weight 10'6" euro rod with RIO nymphing fly line and a leader I tied with Maxima Chameleon. I typically use #16 Perdigon nymphs. I've had great success with this setup. Evan caught a 20" redside with it.

That’s awesome, thanks for sharing. I’m a big perdition fan myself. Super effective fly. I’ll bet that that big of a fish on that rod was pretty fun!

It felt like a whale on that pole. I love that rod for small creeks with smaller fish. They feel so much bigger than they really are.

@@matstaley388 ha! Yeah I’ll bet! I have caught a few steelhead on my 3wt. I thought for sure I was going to break the rod each time. Good times.

I have a 10' 3wt echo . I'm running a mono rig setup . I just started fishing the euro setup this year. So far it has been very effective for me.

That’s awesome! I’ve heard a lot of good things about those Echo rods. I’ve been wanting to play around with the mono set up as well, I really like the idea of it.
@joshholt1513

@@prolificnorthwest I have the carbon xl. Went with that rod due to the price point and wasn't sure how much I would like euro nymphing. The mono rig has its ups and downs. I have not fished an actual euro line so I don't have anything to compare to. I do like that I have a regular fly line on the reel so I can easily take the mono rig off , tie a tapered leader on and throw a dry fly if the situation arises then put the mono rig back on and go back to nymphing.
@prolificnorthwest

@@joshholt1513 Yeah, that's a smart approach with the Echo rod. Another great brand at an approachable price is the stuff from @redtruckflyfishing8151 I've fished a few different setups from them and was really impressed, plus James is a really great guy. Something to keep in mind for any future needs. I like the idea of being able to use your reel elsewhere with the mono set up. My setup is permanent and while I suppose I could just have a spare spool, this particular reel would be perfect for 5wt single hand rod....hmmm...something for me to think about. Thanks for sharing all of this. Cheers!
