Thanks for the comments. Im glad you stumbled across this older video. It's my favourite trip ever, something I will remember for along time. Don't worry I think everyone is stuffing their faces at this time of year. If you get the chance to go to Shetland I would definitely recommend it!

My girlfriends grandfather was the first person to drive to the top o ronnies hill as they call it in a Land Rover. He was the last family to leave uyea in the 50 or 60’s if I mind right.

That’s a story and a half! I remember walking past the settlement at Uyea and wondering what it’s history was.

Thanks for doing this Rory. I was wondering if this would be feasible: drive to the old Nato station and using bike assist, go to Lang Ayre. Then return, and drive to North Roe or beyond. Then again use mountain bike and hiking to go to Uyea, and do both of these destinatons in one day?
@rory_scott2 жыл бұрын
Yes that would be fine in one day. I’m not sure about what kind of terrain it’s possible to use a mountain bike on. 100% will save you a lot of time on the North Roe> Uyea journey as it’s a fairly new vehicle track 90% of the way. Not sure about the Lang Ayre bit. Certainly is very steep on the descent to Lang Ayre, a bike wouldn’t get down and it wouldn’t be worth taking down to the beach anyway. It may save you time from the Station car park to Ronas Hill summit and possible the first little bit of descent. You could cycle to Ronas hill summit and a little further down towards Lang Ayre, drop the bike and visit the beach on foot. Then return the same method.

@@rory_scott Thanks for that Rory. I assumed the gravel track you were walking near the end may access Uyea, and then the presence of some man made structures near Uyea on Google Earth seemed to support that as well. I suppose that brings up the question of carrying a bike lock for Lang Ayre. As it appears there is an absence of trees to lock anything to, I suppose you could consider locking two bikes together.
@rory_scott2 жыл бұрын
@@MountainParameters yes that track will take you to the old settlement ruin which is not far from the end of the land. I terrain is grass after that, so I reckon you’d be able to cycle to the end of the land. As for Lang Ayre, I’m sure just over the summit of Ronas Hill as you descend the land is very undulating with lots of small pockets where you could place your bike out of view. I left my 65L rucksack at the top before I went down. Also, I only saw one person the full day so its super quite there.

@@rory_scott Thanks for that Rory. I plan to be there with my son who is used to very agressive mountain biking. At 72 I have an excuse to not bother trying to keep up with him. So it's good to know if I have to stash a bike when he wants to carry on, I can find a hiding spot! I'm hoping that I can find a bike rental shop in Aberdeen as an alternative to shipping my bike back and forth for just a 2 week trip in May.

Excellent film Rory! I live in Shetland and am yet to visit Uyea (pronounced more like ooya or maybe Uooya) and your enthuseasm has reminded me I need to go!
@rory_scott3 жыл бұрын
Haha I think I pronounced it 5 different ways in this video and still never got it right haha! You need to go for sure. My short time there was so special and I’ll never forget it. I swear that place is just magical. I felt like I was at the end of the Earth there. If you’re going I’d recommend starting at Ronas Hill and walking up that coast and making a day of it. Arriving at Uyea felt more special after that entire day of walking! Keep me posted if you ever make it there. Cheers

@@rory_scott I'll let you know! There are many magical places in Shetland. I'm lucky enough to make films for promote Shetland so have no excuse not to have gone yet (I've always used other people's footage of it).

@@stephenmercerProductions yep I agree. I did a 5 day wild camping trip there last year, and was blown away with the cliffs and beaches. Nice.. I may have seen some of your stuff then as I follow them on Instagram and I’ve noticed they’ve been pumping out some great short videos recently!

@@rory_scott Yes, likely - I do most of their films. If you are planning any return trips let me know, we could maybe plan a wee project. it would be good to capture some of your natural enthuseasm for the Islands.

Hey mate, fantastic video! What was the weather like on top of Ronas Hill, temperature/wind chill wise? I am hoping at some point to do a remote wild camp there during the next winter season. Would it be do-able? Thanks!
@rory_scott3 жыл бұрын
The weather was fine when I went there, but that was last September and on a fine day! In winter I suspect it’ll be a totally different ball game, especially with the daylight hours. Maybe temperatures won’t be the issue as Shetland is surrounded by the warm ocean, but a cold temperature along with the wind, Shetland is really exposed, lots of wind..might make it difficult. It’s would be gamble I suspect. The daylight hours is worth thinking about as it’ll be less than 6 hours daylight. Sounds like a great idea but in reality it might be brutal with the darkness. The summit of RH was very rocky with no grass, and not much protection, unless you were camping literally beside the huge cairns at the top for a little wind break. There’s lots more grass + sheltered areas just north/west of RH , closer to Lang Ayre which would be a better option, or anywhere along that coastline.

Hi great video!, yes, Stephen Mercer is almost right. That wrongly spelled name of "Uyea" is actually pronounced "Oy-a".
@rory_scott3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes when I got back from my trip I started to research Uyea and I found a video from John from Adventure Shetland who pronounced it the same way, like ‘Oy-a’. Definitely sounds the best way to say it.
