Just like the beloved battleships....the days of carriers are numbered. Building them bigger and bigger is not the future. But we keep repeating the same mistakes of the past. Now, there are drones, un- maned systems, lasers, pulse guns, and bombs....that can take out a carrier with 1 hit. The cost of making them and the cost of ownership is huge. Many now sit in drydocks for years, awaiting funding, upgrades, and repairs. Bigger is not better. Think....future and learn from the past mistakes. (Navy vet....subs, amphious, and destroyers.)
@Art-is-craft12 күн бұрын
They are not built bigger for looks. They are bigger so as to store more craft and enable more to get into the air. Drones will not dominate naval warfare.
@nole89232 ай бұрын
The super carriers are vulnerable to massive drone or missile swarms and therefore must keep a very long distance from its enemy target. This is why I advocate for about 25-50 small escort carriers that are easier, quicker, and cheaper to build than a super carrier which can take almost a decade to build and insanely expensive. The smaller escort carriers won’t have complex catapult systems but can be well suited for vertical takeoff craft such as the very capable F-35B. If you have a lot more smaller escort carriers you can lose a few and it won’t be a disaster like if you lose a super carrier. Therefore small escort carriers can risk getting closer to enemy targets. I’m not saying get rid of the super carriers because they serve important functions such as reconnaissance and refueling aircraft that small escort carriers couldn’t launch. But, having a lot of small escort carriers that can launch F-35Bs mitigates the risks and vulnerabilities and enhances firepower effectiveness. It was the small escort carriers in 1944 that saved the battle of Leyte Gulf from being a disaster for the US navy.

Most US citizens don't even know what countries make up NATO or even what it stands for! What is a US carrier use say in Afghanistan or even the Ukraine as they won't enter The Black Sea in case it upsets Putin. Most of the time there are more carriers that are tied up in their naval bases because it would cost an absolute fortune to have them all on the go because there's no major conflicts that they are required to be involved in. I think most US citizens believe that these behemoths are on the go 24 hrs, 365 days a year which isn't the case at all.

Does this mean the US Navy finally figured out how to defend its carriers from the Swedish Gotland class of submarines? After trying for a year, when Gotland managed to pass all the defence systems of the mighty CVN-76 with all supply ships, launch torpedoes (well, not really, but take photos proving that they could have) and escape undetected. Then, the US Navy asked to lease the Gotland for another year, but Gotland could still easily have sunk poor old CVN-76 Ronald Reagan and escape undetected at will. So, have they finally found out? After all, they didn't invite HSwMS Gotland to participate in the tests. Go figure... All the fantastic multi-billion dollar types of equipment above deck mean nothing when half a dozen torpedoes from a $100M sub are coming.

@kma364713 күн бұрын
Ultimately, the question is whether the PLA Navy has the ability (ie a missile) that can disable or sink a carrier. If they have such a thing, then this is just a colossal waste of money and time. But, if the carrier has missile defense systems that are sufficient to protect it, then the carrier resumes its role as a powerful projection of power. Keep in mind that we use these in peacetime to keep trillion dollar trade route open and free from piracy, to render humanitarian aid, and disaster relief, as well as to project soft power to aid in diplomatic negotiations. These floating cities aren't just platforms for war. Though that is their primary function by design, in practice, having such a thing is often the key to preventing having to fight a war in the first place. Bravo to the sailors and Navy aviators who operate these floating cities and keep the world safe and stable.

Carriers are the only way to project power globally.

Wonderful video!!

The Chinese have two ski-jump carriers and one conventional carrier that EMALS catapults, and might not have the voltage to maintain a high deployment rate. By the time they have their first CVN the USN will have nine Nimitz and 3 Ford class in service, plus another 10 LHD\LHA.
@scottw30392 ай бұрын
The US without a hypersonic missile in service works on developing new aircraft carriers while the US self-made enemies develop and deploy carrier killing missiles. Makes sense lol

So monstrously powerful they can't even handle the Houthis in the Red Sea, wars are not won by a single weapon system, they are won by logistics and manpower!
@yesplease1012 ай бұрын
The Houthis can't project power. Our Navy was able to keep them hiding in the Yemeni mountains to this day. Our CSGs will prevent other powers from projecting power outside of their borders. Right now the US is the only nation that can do that.

In this nuclear age you don't need such massive ships to win wars.
@aaronkristo858Ай бұрын
The United States has plenty of those as well. It's power will dominate in any arena.

@@aaronkristo858 : Dominate what? They lost in Vietnam, iraq, Syria. Their economy is screwed. Most countries have nuclear weapons. Difficult to guess who wins wars
@aaronkristo858Ай бұрын
@@JSP1234-m6g Vietnam had almost 20 times as many casualties as the United States and 3 times as many casualties as the entire South Korean alliance. The United States never lost a battle in Vietnam. The American public got impatient, but the United States military learned many valuable lessons from that war. The United States lost the war in Iraq? Ask Saddam Hussein who won. The United States lost in Syria? Ask Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi and Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurashi who won. ISIS has had almost 10,000 fighters killed there. The United States has had 11. The United States holds 30.8% of the world's wealth, which is more than any other country on earth. China is second with 18.6%. The economy in America is doing fine. There are 195 countries in the world. 9 of them have nuclear weapons and you think that qualifies as "most" countries? Math is clearly not your strong suit.

@@aaronkristo858 : The measurement of success in a war is not the number of dead. Foolish argument. killing Saddam is not considered winning. US wanted to put democracy there. Nothing happened. Iraq without Saddam is not better anyway. Look at Afghanistan. Americans left Afghanistan after giving the country back to Taliban again. It was such a waste of time and money trying to fight the Taliban. Americans get into battle without any proper plan because most American presidents are below average idiots with a bunch of idiotic advisors who don't know the difference between Iran and Iraq. USA has created more terrorists in the middle East bcoz of their screw-up policies. The only war America won was WW II because of the major support from USSR. Try to learn world history instead of just sticking on to local news. Trump is popular bcoz he doesn't like war.

@@aaronkristo858 : The measure of success in war is not the number of dead. By killing Saddam you only created more Al-Qaeda. Even George bush feels he did not win in Iraq. Only people like you think otherwise. Americans achieved nothing in that war or any other war since WWII. What happened in Afghanistan? They had to give it back to Taliban after sacrificing thousands of American lives. It's better for American presidents to concentrate on internal matters and MAGA. Most of you guys are born and die in the USA. Try to travel around the world and see what real world looks like.

These air-craft carriers, in real war condition, seems like a simple target in the middle of ocean.
@Badju58729 күн бұрын
If only. A carrier travels with an entourage of warships specifically designed to protect it as part of a battle group. Nothing gets within striking distance of a carrier without being turned back or turned to scrap.

Pretty sure the preceding supercarriers already had China's number, but this thing definitely helps stack that deck even further!

Might makes right. There will always be aircraft carriers in America's arsenal.

Better question is, are our allies ready to fund an overwhelming force of their own so the US doesn't have to shoulder the burden to defend them.

The massive advantage that the US and some of its coalition partners have over the Chinese , is the ability to simply sit well over the horizon and operate under a bubble of sensors and shooters re: integrated sensor net-working !

Carriers still play a major of supporting a mobile air fleet.
