Rainy Autumn Tarp Camp in the Woods 🍂

A lovely lil camp in the woods with the autumn colours 🍂 And under a tarp in the rain was a perfect way to spend a night 😊
With the help of the Insta gang I’ve determined this set-up is probably called a ‘lean-to with a lip’ (I may be wrong). It was one of my favourites so far, as it provides great views in every direction except the back, protects from rain and wind and has loooooads of space. Like a freakin’ palace it was!
Getting prepared for tarping in colder weather now, I got myself some down booties for camp, a lil foam sit-mat and a bigger ground tarp.
Due to me being a clumsy oaf who should not be allowed electronics, I’m currently without drone and camera, so this one was filmed mostly on a Canon G7X that I borrowed from a friend.
Have a great day! And thank you so much for watching 😊 Much love, Claire 🌿🐻

People who know me know I like to travel light and like you I put on several layers of clothes, vermal vest and long johns. I'm a walker and can walk miles, across the Norfolk Broads, through Wales along the South Coast, along the coast line of Cornwall, Islay with just the clothes I had on my back (though I do like to have a plastic survival bag to cover myself when it rains. Not exactly camping but I love it. I think it's the walking that's kept me alive 67 now. And I can sit in a landscape all day long and just feel gratitude for another day of life. 👍🙏

Claire. Ref long dark nights. Try audio books. I don't often overnight but I like to go out all day with the dog & I can spend hours just sitting and watching nature whilst listening to a good audio book. I bought a little MP3 player about half the size of a matchbox that lasts about 19 hours and stores loads of books. You can obviously use a phone but I like to turn mine off to avoid disturbance.

Spooning. I like spooning! 😂 I just end up talking to myself on solo's, Claire. Which is alright, until you say, "pardon?" Good night out there. I have now learnt to go to bed with less on and build up layers if you get cold. No getting too hot then and finding yourself stripping off sweaty. Not good.

3:14 is a tawny owl, a bird that was often seen as a messenger of death in earlier days. The call sounds a little like the German "komm mit" (come with me). Perfect to scare the crap out of little children during a night walk trough the forest.

@@WildBeare My uncle had a different explanation back in the day: villages were quite dark during the night hours in older ages, with the only exception of a recent death. The light drew the owls closer and people started to connect their sound to the exitus that had happened in the village.

@kovalsky7620

Could be the light that atracts them in some kind indeed or the rodents atrected to the hauseholds. I saw and heard those beautifull birds hundreds of times ( and am still alive ;) ). Most often they can be heard during mating season when the females try to atract a male, or in a warmer time of the year when the young ones sygnalize their position to the parrents waiting for food. Often they use abbandoned buildings as shelter during the day and it happens that they are common in my area and the nearest forest starts about 30 meters from my house so they're common animals where I live but I really apriciate encountering them. In my country they also are threated as a symbol of luck and wisedom. Also many wolves in my surroundings ... not so plesant encounters, but also fascinating . Cheers

Awesome job I have just a couple suggestions. First mound up a layer of Leaves on the back of the tarp where you see any light coming through. This will block any cold breeze and insulate you a bit. Next you could make a pile of dry leaves under your tarp it will get you up off the cold ground it makes a big difference believe me. I've done a lot of camping and survival practice and it's some of the little things that make a huge difference. Once again great job keep going and thank you for posting your adventures.

Hi WildBeare, long time viewer, first time commenter. My name is Will and I live outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. I've had two questions I've been wanting to ask you, but I always like to figure things out for myself. I don't always get that far. The first is how your screen name is pronounced. Is it (phonetically) Wild Bear, Wild Beer or Wild Beery. It's not important, it's just that I like to pronounce such things correctly as the owner sees fit. The second question is what country you're from. I know your "about" section says you're from the UK, but another thing I pride myself in is nailing the dialect of people from around the world. I've worked with people from all corners of Earth and I would often correctly guess the origin of a person - based on their accent or dialect. My guess is either Ireland or Scotland. I really don't want you to divulge anything you aren't comfortable with. That other KZbinr from Bavaria had/has a stalker and I don't want to put you in any danger. I won't be offended if you don't answer the second question. Anyway, great job on your videos and the best of success going forward!

I'm new to your adventures...still trying to convince myself that Sian Clifford from Fleabag didn't start a youtube channel. You seem like a lovely person. I'm still trying to work my way towards tarp camping. It would help if the lightest tarps didn't cost more than my first expensive tent. One day. Cheers to you PS may I ask what part of the UK you hail from? I just love your accent.

Hi Claire, get yourself a 'spoon knife' , I made a pretty good spoon and still have it 15 years later , made it with a small axe and a spoon knife (instructions in Ray Mears book (think it was called 'Bushcraft')

Hi, I am thinking of getting the OEX Leviathan bag as it on offer for £135 from Go Outdoors for winter camping, do you think that is ok for the price?

What prog.do you use Claire for video editing? Incidentally the forecast this weekend is serious winds. I'm next to the Brecons so I'll be checking the snow and wind out tomorrow. The only National Park where you can legally camp as well.... wink wink.

I spend my time on cooking and baking, wood carving like Kuksa, spoons and God figures "the old Nordic", which I place around the forest in honor of my Gods. Alone as in communion with others, I tell the old stories about the Gods, such as the tales of Odin, Thor, Freyr and Freja. I take outings in nature away from my tent site. Sitting still for countless hours on end “its a form of meditation”, and where nature , the energies and creatures of the forest come closer to you. I see wildlife at very close ranges, sometimes so close that you can reach out and touch them and even feel their presence in and around you. If one believes in the ancient gods like me, one might also feel the spirits of nature and the forest as well 😉

Hi Claire, you should listen 👂 to this record. 'Don't let the rain ☔️ come down' by The serendipity singers. A real blast from the past. You'll find it here on KZbin.

I tend to use the rest time and have an early night when winter camping. Normally bunked up by 2000 and up again at 0600. Long rest time but worth it plus you can always play with phone while warm in sleeping bag. Never a good idea to use a groundsheet bigger than your bivvy bag as rain could collect on top and you'd end up sleeping in a puddle use a seperate one for living space/gear if wanted and leave a gap between the 2 for water run off.

I consulted my Alton goods tarps hand book. It just calls this a lean to shelter. Explains how to setup 33 configurations and all the fancy knots. As its a local Brisbane company i been buying camping gear off them to support them. Shameless plug!

I know it may seem counterintuitive to spending time out in nature but its nice to bring a tablet along sometimes. You have a couple of options when you do that. You can download a book and/or a movie before your trip or you can bring a small WiFi hotspot with you and do whatever you want at that point. I mean, if you invested in a high end Microsoft Surface Pro (or an iPad Pro) you could even edit videos while you're out there, lol (because I know editing those videos can be a pain in the behind). You could even listen to music, your favorite podcasts or an audiobook. Also wanted to say your content is pretty decent. I spend a lot of time building and maintaining large software systems so I don't always get to spend as much time outside as I'd like so it's kinda fun to go virtual camping via your channel. There is a fair bit of good outdoor content to choose from but your beautiful face makes yours just a bit better, lol. Stay safe and have fun! 🤘🤘⛰⛺️
