Bitta Karate speaks: 1989 Rubaiya Sayeed's kidnap and the events in Kashmir thereafter

It was a time when people in Kashmir started hating the word 'Sarkar' known as the government in English. 12th December 1989.
The 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed was an act carried out by members of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, Kashmiri political organisation on 8 December 1989, in Jammu and Kashmir. Rubaiya was the daughter of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the then Home Minister of India in the V. P. Singh government. The kidnappers demanded the release of thirteen of their members in exchange for Rubaiya's release. The Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah did not want to capitulate. But the Central government accepted their demands and freed the jailed activists. Rubaiya was kidnapped within five days of her father being made the first Muslim Minister for Home Affairs (India) by the V. P. Singh Government to instil confidence within the Kashmiri people.

Bitta: Ashfaq Majeed Wani - was the first Commander in Chief of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front. Ashfaq Majeed Wani took Bitta Karate for training beyond the borders (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir - PoK) to train him for 32 days. The Pakistanis, however, did not trust them. So, every time the location was changed, these trainees were blindfolded. Reporter: So, you are ready to die for the people who do not even trust you? Bitta: We do not care for our lives. We want to liberate Kashmir. Reporter: Every time you killed innocent people, you had to get a prior order from Ashfaq Majeed Wani, or you continue to kill on your own? Bitta: No, I only killed after getting orders from Ashfaq Majeed Wani. Reporter: So, you could kill anyone on the order of Ashfaq Majeed Wani? Bitta: Yes Reporter: Anyone? Even if she/he is your mom or brother? Bitta: Yes Reporter: Your state is worse than that of slaves Bitta: How this is worse? They gave us details of the tasks that we will be assigned after joining. If people were not interested, they were free to leave. Working for the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front increased a sense of hatred in the mind of Bitta Karate towards his motherland, that he did not hesitate to kill innocent people. Bitta: They are not innocent and all. Reporter: But you did not know whether they were innocent or not. You killed them on order. Bitta: Yes Reporter: How many people did you kill? Bitta: I do not remember how many people I have killed. Reporter: You have killed so many people that you do not even remember how many people? Bitta: No, I killed about 10-12 people. Reporter: 10-12 people or 20? Bitta: Take an estimate of 20 people. Reporter: All were Hindus or Muslim also? Bitta: Some were Muslim Reporter: The majority were Kashmiri Pandits? Bitta: Yes Reporter: Why more Kashmiri Pandits? Bitta: Because there were orders. Reporter: Who was your first victim?... When did you commit the first murder? Bitta: That is what I am also thinking…. My first victim was Satish Kumar Tickoo. Kashmiri Hindu Reporter: Who was he? Bitta: I got orders to kill him, so I killed him Reporter: But who was he? Bitta: He was a Kashmiri Hindu Pandit. Reporter: You killed him because he was a Kashmiri Hindu Pandit? Bitta: No, he was also, perhaps, a member of RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh). That’s why Reporter: So, is it a crime to be a member of the RSS? I mean, if someone is a member of the RSS, you will kill him? Bitta: No, I told you that we get orders to kill XYZ. If someone else were given the order to kill XYZ, they would have killed XYZ too.
