I just love how methodical this dance is. There's a certain method to their steps, a certain logic if you will. The two sides start out by facing away from each other, then move in towards each other and exchange places, then form clusters of 4, then clusters of 2, and finally all clusters merge into one chain and end the dance. It's almost as though the dancers were following some pre-set formula.

Mizo Cheraw is a sophisticated dance using bamboo for systematic and rhythmic beats. It has a rich cultural context - it's a dance celebrating harvest and performed on special occasions. The attire worn here is Kawrchei (top), puanchei (lower) and a headgear called 'Vakiria'. This set is the most representative of Mizo traditional attires. Apart from bamboo, darbu and khuang (traditional musical instruments) are also typically used, but not in this performance.

Bamboo dance(cheraw) in particular is one of the oldest mizo traditional dance. It is believed that the dance already exist in the 1st century A.D while the mizos were still somewhere in the yunnan province in china before their migration into chin hills in the 13th century. Some of the tribes living in SouthEast Asia have similar dance on one form or the other with different name. However, on March 12th 2010 Mizoram set Guinness World Record for the largest bamboo dance in the world. Among mizo/people some says that cheraw was first perform by lai clan(one of the mizo clans are probably the oldest mizo clan) community and later expend in different part of mizo community altho some argue to that.
