The apache reservations in Arizona have been thinning their forests and they hardly get the huge fires or if fires do start they are put out quickly. Keeps jobs year-round too. Native american thinking of taking care the forests not letting them grow thick.

More frequent and directly controlled forest fires are an insanely logical response to this disaster, before humans came along, trying everything in their power to stop forest fires, North America's forests would regularly burn themselves as a form of maintenance. Preventing every single forest fire is the same exact thing as packing kindling into a fire-pit while dousing it in kerosene.

The tangled mess of Pines, oak and trash brush is begging for a fire. The BLM owns 65 acres back there and the other land is private property. I've been here 25 years and keep my land clear of unwanted and unnecessary trees and brush. According to old pictures in the local motel this area was pretty much clean of cluttered woods. Now homeowners move in and let all this crap grow right up to there homes and some build decks around pines and oaks which is dumb because those trees continue to grow and start wrecking the deck and dropping lots of trash on the roof etc., I've repaired a few of those decks.

Part of the problem is the Clean Air Act. Most of the problem is logging companies and homeowners who don't want controlled burns. Logging isn't "management," and it makes the problem worse.

As usual, the government and enviro-mentals are doing things backward. If you want healthy forests you need to harvest the OLD growth, not the young growth and trees need to be far enough apart from each other that they can thrive and when one gets hit by lightning (or an enviro-mental, as has been happening so much) and burns, it doesn't catch all of the others on fire also. Plus the old growth don't produce oxygen, they are decaying so they produce CO2, it's the young growth that produces oxygen (although your lawn produces far more oxygen).

California has done next to no prescribed fire treatment of the forests the past 100 years. As a result, incredible amounts of fuel have built up over the years. We need to abandon the idea that all fires are bad and should be suppressed. Low intensity fires are in fact essential to maintain forest health. Without them, you get what we have now - large buildups of biomass so that when fires do start, they are destructive.

In all my life living and traveling this California state I have never seen such miss managements of our forests. There is equipment that is soft on first floor to reduce any damage to forests. I don't see them used as much as they could. The fires, Cal Fire does not have an initial attack force to get on a fire putting it out with in an hour of reported. Fires are only managed. A back burn that took out the town of Greenville CA was a back burn that was set on the wrong side of the fire line. Miss managed leads to fires growing into beasts eating everything in its path and added so much more to climate change than all our vehicles together. Thin the forest responsibly, put the fires out immediately, don't watch them burn for more state and fed money. Bring a beautiful California back.

If we're really concerned about climate change (and we should be) then we should act on study & control of the massive emissions of methane in the Permian Basin (W TX to SE NM). Methane is ~40 times as powerful a greanhouse gas as CO2. Funny how trump greased the skids for that. Methane releases, if captured, can be used for much useful energy generation.

Sorry if I step on toes here, but the forestry dept and the lumberjacks had everything worked out and then laypeople changed the laws. Both the forestry dept and lumberjacks cared deeply about the trees and wildlife. Some of that clear cut leads to the most lush forests, like the forest in The Last of the Mohicans movie. With the forest fires before the California law intervention forest fires were small and burnt small areas like small controlled burns. Maybe leaving it to the former experts was the way to go. Displacing a squirrel or owl is better than what is happening now.

Sadly the forest contributes to rainfall. Drought will probably last until the forest regrows. When it storms now, the ground can not absorb it well either, and with no working treeroots, so here come the mudslides. But laypersons know best.

i can remember back in the 80'"s as a young man after logging we went in and burned all these slash debre then envirolmentalist came in and said this is bad so that stopped happening now there say fires are good sorry but it doesn't swing both way to support your narrative when it convinces you. logging trees with bark beetle helps keep them in check. slash burning and prescribe burns are a good thing as well as logging i have seen the positive effect from this myself hunt grounds for prey deer habitats new trees growth food for smaller animals better ground water retentions fire breaksplaces for animal to flee during fires i can go on forever with a list of positive effect
