I had discovered after planting parsley and dill that they are host plants for beautiful Black Swallowtail butterfly. I had babies hatching and eating the herbs. I am thrilled to plant more for them.

I’m switching all of my tomatoes to dwarf varieties this year. They’re ready earlier, they don’t get 10ft tall, and I might actually be able to get some fruit before the sun and bugs kill them off.

Merlin cucumbers. They don’t need to be pollinated and every flower is a female. They only sell them at Burpee! They don’t get huge but they’ve definitely been a game changer for me in zone 10 b Southwest Florida.

Have you ever tried Culantro? It’s often used in Spanish Sofrito‘s. Coming from cilantro. But it’s long and spiky and is much more potent than cilantro . I love it.

Had good success last year with Burpless cucumbers. We had cucumbers out our ears with only 3 or 4 plants. I didn’t know what to do with all of them, but did find a good easy recipe for pickles. Can also dehydrate to make chips.

Thanks for all the information! When I moved down here in 2020, I tried starting my garden in my west-facing front yard in the summer (because that's what you do, right?). But things would sprout and then instantly burn no matter how often I watered things. Last fall, I decided to actually do my research (and found you!) and figure out what the heck was going on! Went with a few raised beds and moved the garden to the east-facing back yard (with plenty of shade!). Things are looking good! Next step is irrigation (and a few cut flowers)! As for growing cilantro for its leaves, I've had good luck with Lime Basil. They're basically interchangeable in most recipes. The big downside is it tends to bolt end of July.

I got an heirloom tomato called Pink Bubblegum back in October and it already produced quite a few fruits that are striped and delicious, very sweet. Also, in East Tampa I've got a passionfruit vine growing and it's just a single vine and it's been dropping tons of fruits. I've probably got over 30 fruits at the moment despite the cold weather. It grows like a weed!

The best cucumber i have personally grown is the “Party time” cucumber. It’s polynicarthic (however you spell it) but they don’t need pollination, produce a ridiculous amount of cucs, disease resistant. 4” long pickling cucs! I try to have at least 6 plants for ENDLESS pickles 😂

When I pick up starts that have multiple plants per cell I do my best to gently separate them. It doesn't work well with all plants since some have more sensitive roots than others, but I've found that tomatoes and rosemary are pretty resilient to my manhandling, while peppers and mustard greens are a little more sensitive. I don't try it with root crops since I start those in ground because at best they are tricky to transplant and just don't make it at worst.

Easy trellis idea. Perennial pigeon peas as posts (takes time to grow them but they grow fast) with bamboo poles connecting them. Doesn’t need to be bamboo I just have that available. It’s nice to have a food producing nitrogen fixing trellis. Just do not use rope/string as the top horizontal connection as these post will lean inward. I did this on accident, yams started growing up my nitrogen fixing trees and I saw an opportunity.

I have a quandary. I have tomato plants that have small tomatoes and bugs are already attacking (I live in Cutler Bay so very much 10b ) I decided to cover with garden netting to keep bugs out but then will I get less tomatoes because pollinators can’t get to the flowers? Also, should I cover the tomatoes that don’t have blooms? It would be great if you did a master class on south Florida gardening. I’d pay for it. Your knowledge is valuable!

Cucumbers: last year, I had 2 varieties, one of the bonnie plant starts (variety unknown), which I trained up a tomato cage, it produced very huge cucumbers that I ended up pickling - these turned out delicious, and the bees loved the flowers! The second was "Spacemaster" - a smaller variety that would be best for apartment patio / smaller spaces, which also had good production despite the influx of pests (they actually killed my first variety then migrated to these, so definitely plant some extras as sacrificial crops!

@@2075vj put tomatoes in the ground at the end of September or beginning of October and you will get a great harvest! If you are growing from seed that means start your seeds in August. Lasagne gardening has worked best for me… that’s layering leaves, chicken manure and a combination of top soil, peat moss and mushroom compost. Do two layers of each then plant. You will have a garden like no other! I just harvested the biggest broccoli head I’ve ever seen. I’m in zone 10b Southwest Florida, North Fort Myers.
