That’s not only a nightmare for the young guy that suffered and died, but for all of the others in their shelters,. That is a very long time to hear someone suffering. I’m almost certain that has caused substantial PTSD....( which I don’t believe was a diagnosis in 87 unless you were a Vietnam era Vet).. I’m going to probably have a nightmare myself after listening to the description!

I don't understand why they went into the burn rather than fleeing away from the fire

There was a ravine to the north cutting that route off

they tried to push through the fire front to get to the area already burned (the black) people have done that and survived. But, things are very dire when that is your only option.

You go "into the burn" because the majority of the energy is already used up. If you try to out-run the fire, you will not make it and you will have all sorts of fresh fuel that is starting to burn around you. Go to the black is the motto that every wildland firefighter knows.

“one foot in the black.” If ur escape route is cut off u only have the burned over area as a chance for survival.

There´s a surplus of 4 engined airliners now. Possible air tankers, but I doubt there´s an overarching government institute that can make a national effort to aquire these and put them into service...
