The wadi indeed is very beautiful. It is perhaps caused by water cutting into the ravine, which seems like sandstone. Saudi has subterranean water stores, which may be because of ancient rivers running through the land which is now desert. Same is the story with Saharan Africa. Underground water is present. Extracting it is a major issue. The local Arabs were hospitable and generous enough to safeguard your belongings and later sharing their food with you. Source of water in such valleys are from aquifers. Aquifers are body of rock that holds groundwater. The precipitation infiltrate the soil beyond the surface and water collected in empty spaces underground.
