The wetlands of Bhigwan are a magnet for waterfowl, with over 230 species of birds recorded here. During the winter months, the area transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colours as migratory birds arrive from as far as Siberia and Europe. Flamingos, ducks, herons, and spoonbills are just a few of the many species that grace these waters.
But Bhigwan is more than just wetlands. The surrounding grasslands are equally rich in biodiversity, offering a contrasting yet complementary habitat. Here, you'll find a different set of avian wonders, including the Indian Courser, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, and various raptors like the Short-toed Snake Eagle and the Indian Spotted Eagle.
In addition to its rich birdlife, the grasslands are home to the graceful Chinkara, also known as the Indian Gazelle. These shy and agile antelopes are perfectly adapted to the dry grasslands, and their presence adds to the charm of Bhigwan’s diverse ecosystem.
Wolves, with their elusive nature, are often spotted in packs, moving stealthily through the grasslands. These apex predators play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.
The Indian Jackal, another inhabitant of these grasslands, is often seen on the prowl, searching for food. Their adaptability and keen senses make them skilled survivors in this diverse ecosystem.
Foxes, with their distinctive bushy tails and curious demeanour, are a delight to observe. The Indian Fox, often seen in pairs or with their cubs, adds a touch of charm to the grassland landscape. They are agile hunters, preying on small mammals and birds.
As dusk falls, the elusive Striped Hyena makes its appearance. Though primarily nocturnal, these scavengers play a crucial role in the ecosystem, cleaning up carrion and maintaining the balance of nature. Their eerie calls echo through the night, a reminder of the wildness that still thrives here. If you want to spot them, be there first thing in the morning.
