Another bird photographer here, using the Sony A7R V with the Sony 200-600mm. With enough light available I slap the 1.4x teleconverter on it. That 300mm 2.8 certainly looks nice for low light situations but I'm not sure I could live with its limited reach. My pics always tend to be on the long end of the 200-600.

That's cool! Wildlife is my jam. I would love to visit a place like that next time I get to Florida. I am normally shooting the Etowah River area (home area) in Northwest Georgia, going to Cherokee, NC for the elk or even Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains for the black bear. That looks like a great setup. Thanks for letting me tag along!

For wildlife I'm using the Sony 200-600 paired with the A1. It's rarely let me down except in really low light but I don't shoot that much in those situations. I would love the 300 paired with the 2x. The 200-600 is a fantastic lens but after a few hours lugging it around it does put wear and tear on these old bones.

I'm going to jump in and buy this lens, which for bird photography will need to be used with teleconverters (here in the UK, at least). I have no doubt that it is a beautiful lens but 300mm is not great for bird photography unless you're on The Farnes! I look forward to doing some real world comparisons between it at 600mm (2x tc), my 600mm f4 and my 200-600mm. Thanks for the video!

Fantastic pics and video. Any chance you would share your location for this shoot? I am always looking for new places to shoot birds and wildlife in South Florida. That alligator was amazing. Lived in Florida more than 20 years and still never come across that.
@Rod-h7m5 ай бұрын
I also live in Florida and have seen this a number of times as long as I hang out long enough early in the morning at pretty much any location populated with Alligators during the months of May and June. One good place is Orlando Wetlands. Just make sure to arrive at Sunrise and stay 3 hours or so :) Good luck.

Yes it is the lightest 300mm f 2,8 lens on the market. I have Canons 300mm 2,8 and its 2,4 kg so almost a kg more ! I now also have the 400mm f 4,0 do mk2.That is 2,1kg and thats the one I use mainly with the 1,4 extender when I am walking around. You are obviously from Sweden, do you live in Florida? I go to Gainesville once a year for christmas with my daughter, we visit her moms family there. We are from Sweden, my daughter is american and swedish.

I love bird photography. It’s so relaxing. Towards Tampa St Pete. Fort Desoto is great for migratory birds. Tampa Bay Harley Davidson off Adamo, has a dock and pond that has great access to stork nesting photography. The Harley dealer is cool with you parking to shoot the birds. You can get great shots with a 300-600mm. Cape Coral, you can shoot ground nesting owls. You can shoot from your car and a 70-200 or 300 is prefect. When looking for owls, look for the flagged off nest marked by the city. They are so cute.

Thanks for watching and thank you for all the good spots I have to check out! I've walked around quite a bit in Cape and saw all the owls all the time, never had a camera with me though. Definitely would love to go back and get some photos of them, they're hilarious and cute 😁📸

Great video Thanks for sharing Curious how much cropping you had to do at roughly 420mm. I've shot herons in the pan handle at 600 and still had to crop in about 10-15% to get them large enough in frame.

Hello Yrsa, a pleasure to see your video, as always, very good, I am a Sony user, tell me is it really worth buying that lens, I have a sigma sport 150 - 600 that works very well although a little heavy, with the X2 multiplier it would be good?

Great work and excellent narration. But viewers should be mindful that in order to get steady footage like shown in this video, we will need a pretty heavy tripod plus fluid head, which is normally a 4kg combo. And 600mm (300mm + 2x) is pretty much the entry level focal length in terms of bird videography, as we don't have the luxury to crop in post. So despite the beautiful images and soothing b-roll, really life experience of a bird videographer is far less comfortable.
@YrsaClicks5 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! Tripods are definitely useful for smooth footage, that's why having a cart of something to bring all your gear is useful if it gets too heavy 😊

Yea. This lens is a winner. Half the price of 400 and 600. And alot smaller and half the weight as well. Since long prime is very limited on Sony… only this 300. Sigma 500 and Sony 400 and 600. This 300 can fit tele and give user a lightweight 420mm and 600mm. Having said that. .. I wish Sony can release those prime like Nikon.. 400 500 600 800 that is not 2.8 or f4. Not everyone wants to bring out 3kg lenses or able to afford those 12-15k lenses.

It is obvious from many of your images that 300mm (no matter the manufacturer) is just not enough for bird photography. Also, many of your images would be improved if you got down closer to eye level instead of standing…having said all that, I did enjoy the walk with you.

I was close to buying the Sony 300mm 2.8 with teleconverters, but then the Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sport was announced, which I bought, the Sigma 500mm are smaller and more light weight than the Sony 300mm, I am very happy with the Sigma 500mm, it is excellent and I can highly recommend it ! I saved a lot of money, so i could afford the Sony A7RV, which are a much better Camera than the A7CR, I like the design of the A7CR with the EVF in the corner, but the resolution and the magnification on the EVF is too low, you do not have a joystick and the IBIS is not as good as in the A7RV, the shutter in the A7CR is not as good as in the A7RV, to mount a grip on the A7C for better handling are not good, the compact size and the low weight get higher, (stupid !), so you pay too much for the A7CR !!! I do hope that a Sony A7CRII will improve all these things, SONY !!!?
@thomastuorto99296 ай бұрын
Gets you there for less $$$$. I'm sure that is the reason one go for it over the A7R5.

Good for you, but your camera frames will drop from 10 fps to maybe 8 or 6 it depends on the 3rd party lenses, only native lenses can make the full. camera frames and Sony 300mm is an f/2.8 which is a huge difference in wildlife photography, investment in lenses, not Cameras
