Paul Dano acted his socks off in There Will Be Blood, the church service where he came across like a man possessed with the devil himself with almost full on choking was spectacular. Im yet to see him as Brian Wilson in love and Mercy.

@@timothyw98 are you kidding i thought he was terrible in There Will Be Blood hes the only thing i hate about the movie the rest is great. Hes not up to acting with DDL. However i think he did a good job directing this

I used to be like that. But, he has done some bad movies as well. Prince of Persia? I didn't like it. There are few others. But, he is an incredible actor.

It felt like the experience of diving head first being immersed in a great American novel more than the experience of watching a film, characters so multi layered ,so deep , and then at the end i saw it was based on a book and now I know I want to read the book .The film is visual poetry A masterclass in storytelling acting and directing ,cinematography .characters ..devastatingly real, honest .Beautiful ,moving , incredible in every detail .. The stunning realisation that happens at a certain age when the blinkers come off at 14 ,when we are no longer a naive child and we see our parents are fallible human . ...Cary Mulligan is beyond magnificent in this one of the most compelling complicated female characters i've ever seen written for film I can't think of another actress who could pull that part off so seamlessly.You never know what she may do next ,and you get the feeling as her character goes off the rails, that that the character herself has no idea either ..it makes her riveting to watch. ..A film about the fragility of family love and what is means to be human and imperfect.. It is exquisite visually ,rich in period detail, wonderful art direction and choice of Montana as a location ..Every detail serves the story The dialogue is sparse, more is written on the blank wide innocent face of the 14year old son as his Mothers adultery registers in those angry blue eyes ,than any monologue could ever convey .It works on so many levels ,both as a story about the disintegration of a doomed marriage as a story about the disintegration of the 1950'S American Dream ..I absolutely loved it.

Just watched this and I think every point mark had brought up here is what I was mentally jotting down in my mind while watching it. A very impressive film, great performances, great Debut by Paul Dano. Not read the book, but this was a proper story, also through Dano’s lens does it unfold properly as well. Big thumbs up.

Watched this on my flight today. As a child of divorce it definitely resonated with me even though i didn't necessarily enjoy it. But good performances and directorial debut from Paul Dano.

I'll comment more when I'm done, but half way through this film right now, was very excited to finally watch it. Love Paul Dano, Jake, and Carey. I just, well, I get that that there is a history: the husband Jerry is in and out of work and it wears on their marriage, but the development, where we meet the characters, Jeanette just seems to instantly turn into an egotistical materialist. Im pro telling both sides of the story, but anyone leaning on this film to show the strength of women, I'm just very much hoping that strength isnt shown here as her being a complete asshole. Hoping for an arch. I currently sympathize with her character, but when Jerry left she almost immediately changed into someone else. Just seemed too fast. And just thirty minutes ago she was so encouraging to Jerry. And Jerry IS employed, just not at home. I get that Jerry may have needed space, and perhaps Jeanette did too, but her character went from zero to total jerk really, really fast.

@@sammylove14 Yeah. Ha, never followed up on my comment like I said I would. Thanks for writing that. Yeah, I ended up still liking the movie, and the ending is really heart wrenching and good. But yeah, she turned into a weenie really fast to me still plot wise and character wise. I guess that happens to both men and women in real life too, but they arent engaging characters that I'd like to know and maybe that's why her actions seemed to not make sense to me.

Was it really fast though? Jerry has been out of work for some time and refused to get the previous job back when offered. Maybe, she was fuming inside for a long time and it all came out at once like a volcano eruption when Jerry decided to take the job of fighting the wild fire. She said to her son that they have not been intimate for a long time, that indicates Jerry has been disturbed for a long time.

@@arnobchowdhury9641 Think the pacing of the film and the age of the kiddo differs. Also posted that three years ago. Haha! But, hey, you can have your take, friend (and I never followed up)! I think ultimately after a second go, the film's pretty great and addresses heavy dealing with grace and poise and man, the last scene is a beauty. But I dont think 'time' was really represented well, or if it intentionally wasnt, that I dig her character that much still.

But, I thought it was represented with the radio and tv programs and conversations. I am not from USA, so I have no clue what was playing on the radio and TV. I just think she was very depressed and unhappy. There was no motivation. That was what I'd call her character motivation, an absence of motivation - what I got from it at least.

She’s a character just like many women in the 50s- a repressed housewife, following her husband where the job takes him, no matter how big or little. Once he walks out, never to know if he’s actually coming back again, she treats it as a relief, a chance to try and find out who she is again.
