This oil painting of an old barn was painted on canvas mounted to board. Even though I like many aspects of this landscape, I'm not releasing this painting beyond sharing it online. I wasn't happy with how the composition came out in the end and I think the overall painting makes me feel uneasy. So, I'm setting it aside for personal reasons and might take another look at it further down the road. Not all paintings come together the way they are intended. Composition is very important to me at this point in my art journey, and I just know that something is off. I think it's important for an artist to accept the errors that are made and move on to the next artwork with confidence. I will take a lot away from this experience and will not make the same mistakes again.

@@boooo6789Agreed. Blinded by the light. Barn sits there like a king. But aren't we supposed to look at the duck? Love the glare and the overexposure in the upper left. But yeah. The composition is problematic.

Thank you, Chuck. You have captured the atmosphere perfectly.. Perhaps, just return to that place, at that perfect hour of the day for light and contrast. Just sit. Bring a beverage of choice. Your sketchbook, in case. But just sit, soak in the presence ...observe....reflect...rrelish And actually, I like the ducks because they add that contrast of 'startle'; early activity in a rural area. And again, the sharp angles of their wings add a logical contrast and enhance the play of soft light on the clouds. ❤❤❤Capturing the 'why' of why one seeks to capture early morning light: because it is new every morning. It is beautifully rendered. Those beautiful pthalo blues added into your shadows against your warm underpainting is always such a dynamically satisfying applicational process - ❤❤❤

Another masterpiece as far as I am concerned. Don't see how this composition isn't working for you, but that's why you're the artist and I'm just a KZbin patron. Getting down to the details of the painting can make all the difference. Great painting anyway, and thanks for sharing the process with us. Hope we can watch how you "fix" this one and share your thoughts with us on how you can make this painting even better.

I only know two great artists who are sometimes prey to their doubts and their dissatisfaction. The second is cited in one of the comments. But of the two, you are the one who expresses and shares your feelings the most and that makes you incredibly authentic and sincere. This is also why we feel deeply touched by a work of such great mastery! This work is as magnificent as it is deep and sincere. That said, and I speak with full knowledge of the facts, I understand your very great sensitivity coupled with perfectionism. Because you are also a talented photographer who experiences great emotions in nature. From then on it becomes very difficult to reconcile this emotion (almost "photographic") with what we would like to express in a pure creation. Someone famous once said “when you have doubts then you will be a great artist”. This work is an attempt to express what you see in nature and what you imagine. What creates your inner conflicts. On the left of the painting: what we see in reality, the light sometimes blinding and so emotionally intense. On the right what lives inside you. Two pure emotions that make you unique and your talent. It's long, sorry. But that's what I felt watching you paint.

Excellent work. My mother painted a windmill scene and she went through all of the four seasons before she was happy. Now decades later, she looks at her painting on the wall and questions if she should change it again lol She had a field planted, the wheat growing, harvested, the entire circle painted over and over. I paint and when I've lost the soul of the painting, I stop and walk away.

I like this painting, thank you for sharing even your not as well loved pieces! I am intrigued though, I have a few paintings that I am not thrilled about and have always wondered if they are worth going back to and fixing. Do you think it is a good learning exercise to go back and re-work old paintings? Maybe it would make a great learning video for us if you took one of your paintings that you are not satisfied with and re-worked it, explaining what you are doing and why. Thanks again for sharing Chuck!!!

I've had paintings like that too. I have found several things helpful. 1) I put it on the piano or on the floor in front of the fireplace (with it off, of course). Some place where I can look at it at a distance, without concentrating on it too hard. Like glance at it while watching tv or reading a book. 2) I take a picture of it with my phone. Sometimes that gives me the perspective like a second pair of eyes. 3) I ask whomever comes to the house to have a look at it and give me feedback. Eventually it comes to me, and I know it will to you too. I know it will bug you until you figure it out, haha! :) If and when it doesn't get resolved, I have been known to paint over the whole thing. But that's as a last resort. I think I've done it maybe 3 or 4 times in my 17 years of painting. So, ya.

Greetings from Minnesota. Hey Chuck really nice work there I like the log cabin you did 2 months ago a little better but this one turned out very nice, well done, hey I know you did your painting room a while back and it was nice work. I noticed a minor distraction your paint brush is putting out two shadows while your painting do you think one long light would work out better it would probably be even lighting on the canvas. just a suggestion Chuck.
@chuckblackart

Appreciate it thanks. I still use my 48" light fixture for photographing my work, but I like this track light setup better for painting. The main reason is because it allows me to paint under the same lighting that will be used when the painting is displayed. I can also adjust it when needed to give me different perspectives. But in the end I've found that I do better work under light that is more similar to how it will be displayed under. Big even lighting is great, but then the appearance of your work changes once it's hung in a gallery or room setting.

My humble opinion on this angle of the barn that you don't like. Looking more closely, it appears to me that maybe it's just a question of shadow. A color that slightly differentiates the front facade. In the current state, the two sides seem to be in continuity, we cannot precisely see the edge which forms the angle and this slightly disturbs the perspective, it seems to me.
