@@neonaleeth At the very beginning of the video you can see that at the entrance the twigs are already kinda arranged for a nest which shows that the Kestrel was already there before, getting ready to lay her eggs. Kestrels are not nocturnal birds, so she had to make her nest during daytime. If the barn owls would've been there when she first arrived (since owls are nocturnal, so they would've been there during the day, sleeping, if it was their nest already) and would've scared her away. If she didn't claim it as her nest already I doubt that she'd still stay there and fight after the first attack. She wasn't trying to take over a nest, she was defending hers.

@@hermi8918 this is an owl nesting box. They were already in is and the female barn owl was sitting on the eggs…they will not give up a nest box once they have started laying eggs. The barn owls gave the kestrel warnings to move on since this box is already occupied. It never showed the male kestrel brooding the eggs, perhaps the male didn’t think sharing nesting space with the larger barn owls was a good idea and noped out of that. Just about any other spot than this one would be a huge improvement. Hopefully it was early in the season and the kestrels selected a more suitable nesting spot.

This is unreal. That kestrel is blindly determined to have her nest there. I’d say the wall is at fault if it was one maybe two encounters, but she knew the owls were there though, because she’d be facing the area the barn owls came from often and would at times immediately escape. Plus the fact they came from both directions and the fact it was an every day occurrence, this kestrel just didn’t want to give up and maybe thought having her eggs there would deter the owls, or shoo them off? I really don’t understand this encounter at all.

But above all, they don't think like humans, they don't have the capacity for it. They're just going on instinct, trying to find a secluded place, dumping eggs and defending them. Never seen such a thing and I've seen many nesting boxes. But where is the male kestrel? And the female kestrel was very determined she even put her own life on the line every day for a few eggs...very interesting. So many questions.
@wildplanet320 Жыл бұрын
The male is present at 00:06, during 2 months he entered the nest several times and passed food outside the nest.

@@wildplanet320 Thanks for the reply I didn't realize it was the male! And that's great I'm glad she wasn't all alone. 😄

Throughout the entire video I kept asking myself, why wouldn't she just abandon the nest? After repeated attacks, several times a day every single day and night, and yet she kept coming back. I have to respect her tenacity but she was constantly willingly putting her life at risk by insisting on nesting literally in the same nest as a mating pair of barn owls, both being twice her size and intent on either scaring her off for good or outright killing her. Idk what kind of nesting conditions they have out there where she's willing to risk repeated attacks by these towering barn owls on a daily basis just to nest a clutch of eggs but I hope they improve. The owls and the kestrel deserved better than this

The Barn Owls were there first, the Kestrels were stupid enough to choose that spot as home. Honestly that was the worst place to pick for a home. The barn owls usually are not too aggressive, but this pushed them over the edge. I am honestly surprised that the Kestrel didn't gave up sooner. Also the designers of the bird house are to blame. If you see that this will become a problem change the design!

The perfect definition of keeping your head on a swivel at all times. This is madness & could only have imagined if the Kestrel focused on how more difficult it would be to defend the hatchlings, because the Owl still have to go & come 😅
