You can use Sig Stix it or poly tac to paint on the structure, and then just iron the fabric down like all the other coverings we are used to. No dope necessary during the initial application of fabric. Then I use dope to seal the fabric to keep it tight, and helps to feather sand the seams. I use latex paint over the top of this. for color.

I have used Stix-It, Poly-Tak, and non taughtening nitrate dope in the past and still use it to this day. All three work exceptionally well. I do seal the wood with 3 to 4 coats of nitrate dope to make sure the weave gets properly sealed before painting!

Hi Bud I'm enjoying your build series very much. I'm in the process of a 1/4 scale Piper Cub refurbishment and thinking of using your Carbon Tu be method for the Elevators.

Have you ever tried liquid glove on your hands?
@BudChristensen2 жыл бұрын
Jim, I have not tried liquid glove before. Nitrile gloves are my go to hand protection. Over the years I have found it easier to smooth seams and overlaps with bare hands.

@@BudChristensen I agree about the gloves, give it a try will help with not having the residue on your fingers for weeks. Great videos BTW.

What can you do to keep a dope finish from cracking over time?
@BudChristensen2 жыл бұрын
It only cracks over open structure, AKA the Wings, between ribs, like it does in full size planes. I like to call it "weathering" 😉

@@BudChristensen So, it isn't something to worry about?
@BudChristensen2 жыл бұрын
@@SomeGuyInSandy Not at all! All of mine have little cracks in the paint and still attached after 16 years.

@@BudChristensen Alright! Weathering it is :)

Does it stick to aluminum like the full scale?
@BudChristensen2 жыл бұрын
I couldn't say. I haven't had to "stick it" to aluminum with nirate dope. I don't know if lift with the expansion and contraction of the aluminum substrate.
