Don reviews the extraordinary 1000cc Wilkinson motorcycle. Built by the company famed for producing razors, in the early 1900's they built luxury motorcycles. They produced about 200 machines before the out break of the 1st World War which stopped production - this example is number 160.
It has a top speed of 60mph and some of its features include a 4 cylinder motor (rare for this period), water cooling with the addition of a cooling fan and an unusual hand-start mechanism, slightly precarious for shorter riders.
Don's only word of caution is that because of its comfortable upholstered bucket seat, there's a danger of dropping off to sleep

Fabulous machine, handcrafted like they were in the old days, not mass produced. Very impressed that it will do 60mph too. More videos like this please !

I am from the Teutonic side of the channel... 😊, but this is truly a jewel of a motorcycle, and made in, then Britain! In many little ways very advanced for its days, 4 cylinders, water-cooled (but where's the valve-radio😊)! Very pretty! Would love to have one! Thank you so much for sharing...

What a singular masterpiece! I'm glad KZbin recommend this old vid. I guess Wilkinson went back to making swords and bayonets for the war. It's a shame they didn't get a motorcycle contract instead. I wonder how many still exist out of that small run. Did they make other models as well? That is probably the most valuable motorcycle in the world. P.S. I wish the vid was longer.

What the video does not make clear is just how advanced this bike is for 1912. Beside the obvious 4 cylinder engine, it has a hand-operated clutch, multi-speed gearbox, shaft drive with worm or bevel final-drive, rear suspension by four 1/4 elliptic springs. If it had a drum front brake, little would distinguish it from an early post-WW2 bike.

@@MichaelOZimmermannJCDECS - Don't joke about the valve-radio. I had an old VW Beetle, in fact I had several, but one in particular had an "ancient" valve-radio. It was a delight to show it of to any one looking at the car. Mine, after turning on, took some 30 to 45 seconds until it was "hot" enough to produce some sound other than static. Lovely piece of equipment that attracted many unsuspected smiles. :-) Cheers

I have just sent Sammy Miller a large photograph of a YALE motorcycle ( the Lock Company ) They produced motorcycles between 1902 - 1915. I found the picture here in Thailand, at a sale, where I live. It was a single cylinder, probably 500 cc but they also made a vee twin, probably 1000cc.

It’s great pleasure & surprise to see you have restored this machine to its originality and it works so well. One advice though, as this is 4 cylinder engine, the fuel consumption maybe enormous and yet didn’t see a big tank, but you can add a Hydrogen On Demand from fuel genie systems to go with this bike and you can double up your mileage while exhausting only water vapour. 😀😀

Call ancient aliens, this technology shouldn't exist in 1912. Looks like Doc brown came back and Jules Verned up a fictitious Inline 4 cylinder liter bike to time travel around in, the workmanship and design is incredible.
