85 year old Bhagirathi Gavkar from village Carla ( sanguem ) is unable to walk even a few steps. Her husband is with her, but he is also blind and unable to speak. This elderly couple survives on whatever their relatives and neighbors provide. Bhagirathi was granted a pension of Rs 2,000 per month through the Dayanand Social Security Scheme by the government's Social Welfare Department. However, for the past one and a half years, she has not received her rightful pension. The reason is, she lacks the strength to go to the bank, sign, and withdraw the money from her account. Due to her frailty, no one is willing to risk transporting her by bike. Consequently, she is unable to go to the ration shop to collect both her pension and her entitled grain.
In this loksabha election, voting systems were brought to the homes of the elderly to ensure they could cast their votes. It is unfortunate that the government does not have a mechanism to deliver the rightful pensions to vulnerable citizens like Bhagirathi at their homes. Despite her frailty,Bhagirathi managed to vote at the nearest polling station in this loksabha election 2024 .
