I've had reasonable luck with these. Have two - I used one I got for like $55 on Amazon to pull vacuum on a Rheem I installed DIY on my house. Worked just fine, and pulled down to about 315 microns on that 2.5 ton system. Installed a 2 ton for the upstairs and pulled that down to less than 230 microns. Probably not nearly as fast as a pump designed for techs doing this every day, but for my purposes it worked just fine. Did the triple evac/N2 purge to make sure I got everything in there, purged the lineset first with methanol then acetone as I think I had a burnout on the previous unit (a Goodman, and swapped out the FD that came with the unit with a Sporlan HH just in case). But got it down to a pretty hard vacuum with a similar little Chinese vane pump. Will try to get some videos up at some point showing my DIY HVAC journey.

Years ago I was employed at a company and one of the products were vacuum chambers. A guy that tested them pulled a vacuum on one and left it pulling down over the weekend unbeknownst to everybody else and sometime before Monday the power went off. That little vacuum chamber pulled oil back up from the pump and coated the inside of that chamber. I don't remember the brand of pump but it was before the Chinese import days. Thanks for the interesting video! 👍🇺🇸

I used one of these to pull a vac on my dad's mini split. It was very hot after 30 minutes, but did pull a vaccum to less then 200 microns. I would also not recommend because I doubt it would reliably last for multiple jobs.

I bought a diesel heater thru that outfit. Hope i have better luck. The electric to heat my shop is quite costly when we get below freezing. Due to its cheap construction, I’ll rely on electric for maintaining 55deg, and use the diesel only when attended for raising the temperature.

Interesting, ive got a vacuum pump that was like $40-50 off amazon, had it for about 5 years, neglected it since i still have yet to change the oil in it, N it still runs like a beast pulling systems down under 100microns. Also have a elitech brand touchscreen vac pump that was about $500 when i got it, had it for about 2-3 years and its a beast as well

Curtis, I really appreciate you using Quality tools in your business! Veto , Yellow Jacket and other great brands. I try to buy used name band tools at good prices to save money. I do like the brand Vevor too. Thanks for taking the time to do this! Always enjoy tool reviews. This makes me think when you were pulling a vacuum with a pretty new Schrader removal tool. Not to successful. Oh thanks!

I found a similar single stage vacuum pump, and it was absolutely worthless. It'd run for as long as you wanted it to. It just wouldn't get down below 1,000 microns. The manufacturer sent me another one without any hassle -- it was just as bad as the first. On the other hand, the Harbor Freight two stage vacuum pump actually works quite well, if rather slowly on a split system.

you have to put a fan in front of it so that it doesnt overheat. The chinese pumps get hot and have a limited duty cycle. If you want to run it for 40 minutes in the summer (which is probably when you dont have ac or others dont have ac and they are sweating enough to finally get it fixed) it will overheat the thermistor. If i had a high end Robinair brand i would still not want it to get hot because that would shorten its lifespan. Not everyone has thousands of dollars to spend and the Chinese are good for making OKAY products that will allow a savy person to get the job done. Someone who is smart enough to do the job on their own that can do it better than most pros. Thank them for their efforts and making these products affordable and accessible. You also dont want to buy the cheapest chinese product possible. If you do then you get what you deserve because theres levels of quality with different brands and different cfm and hp ratings. Its only a few dollars more. You cant buy the cheapest crap in existence and conclude they are all crap. Harbor freight could have one that performs better than amazon. Have to read the reviews or watch videos of guys who test them etc.....

Tools you cannot depend on do not belong in my van, toolbag or home. Nothing beats JB, YJ, FP and Appion. Navac and Milwaukee are cool too, but I'd go JB if it was my money everytime. Had JB pumps run for weeks non stop pulling centrifugals down over the winter. Change the oil, turn it on and forget about it. My YJ 8CFM is okay too, but I much prefer the oil drain and fill on a JB plus they are 100% field serviceable.

I used my cheap single stage vacuum pump the other day with two brand new recovery tanks and I could not get down even close to 500 µm. Then, I used a 6 inch quarter inch hose from the vacuum pump to the recovery tank and I was able to pull both of them down to around 350. That's when I stopped the pump, not saying that it could not have pulled it down more. You are set up of multiple tanks, and long lines is totally incorrect .

Bad video and opinion: 1. Connect only one recovery tank, with the shortest hose. (That is known to be the correct way by every HVAC training program I have ever seen.). Your vacuum pump offers two connections. One is a quarter inch and there probably is a half inch inside diameter. Which means you could go with a shorter and larger size hose. You want to do an honest and fair video I would recommend you remake this using the vacuum pump, the shortest and largest hose that you have or even if you just want to go with a common quarter inch hose from the vacuum pump to the recovery tank that is fine, but it should be less then 3 m or less than 3 feet for a realistic opinion. I would then put the micron gauge on and start it up before you engage the vacuum pump. I don't mean to be disparaging, but all those T connections and two tanks and five lines, etc. are totally ridiculous and make no sense to anybody who has the slightest bit of professional training.
