Will a 1998 IXUS point-&-shoot and APS film that expired in 2005 give results good enough for 2024?

I really enjoyed this video, Ed. Great to see some old haunts from my university days (and I can vouch for DSCL myself) and you capturing images of the past before it disappears for good. I’ve never used APS so it was great to share your experience - something you always talk us through in an engaging, interesting and informative way. This is one of the real draws to your channel. Also I enjoy a dabble with expired film, so it was interesting to see how it went for you in the circumstances. I too wondered whether you suffered a light leak? I had such a problem with my Canon A-1 and although in hindsight it showed in the images, I didn’t realise at the time and thought it was just the expired film. I always find your videos so encouraging and inspiring. Best Wishes, Paul

Thanks Paul, that's really kind of you to say, and much appreciated. I must investigate that light leak! Have a great weekend. Ed 🙂

Hi Ed. Enjoyed the video and the aesthetic of the expired film. Good experiment of the little APS camera. I can’t see you trading in the XA2 just yet 😊

Thanks! No, certainly still think the XA2 is as close to perfect as I can find as a pocketable walkaround, though I do now think mine has a problem (film plane out of whack) as there's a lot of softness when there's low light...and it definitely isn't motion blur. Lucy's is way sharper. Might have to look out for a cheap replacement for mine...or "borrow" hers 😉. Have a good weekend. Ed 🙂

Interesting video - been considering picking up an Ixus for fun, but have been put off by the roulette of APS film availability. Having seen this I may be tempted as it’s relatively inexpensive and can be compared to the lo-fi expectations of Lomo photography. Thanks again for such varied and informative content, Ed.

Thanks again for watching and continuing to comment. I'd definitely recommend giving APS a try with something that isn't "mission critical". It is a fun format, and I think overall my results were (at least to my eyes) better with it than with 110 or 126 film. Though it is horses for courses...there was a shot I got on 110 that I think wouldn't have worked better on any other film/camera. It was just the right combo for the job. Have a great week. Ed 🙂

@studioswinden yes it was lovely, but was a long way. Drove 1400 miles in one week. I must say I prefer north wales, snowdonia. We were there this time last year

Interesting Ed, I didn't know that you could get APS-C size film cameras or film. Also in the shot with discarded Costa cups on the table, the writing on the cigarette packet looks Arabic?

Thanks Paul. The packet is certainly not a UK one as I think they have to be completely plain nowadays...must be from overseas.

Looks like a slight light leak in the lower parts of the frame. I shot with AGFA FUTURA, FUTURA II and STAR and got better results, so you might want to try those or FUJI. KONICA MINOLTA does not hold up as well, so you know.

Thanks, that's really interesting...where do you think the leak came from? The camera was "brand new" from what I could gather but would it be worth taping up around the film door next time I shoot with the IXUS? Or could the film have been fogged prior to me getting that? Thanks again, and thanks for watching 🙂

@@studioswinden It could be fogging too, somehow in the same lower corners, but when I used the Viewfinder Shutter on an older APSs camera I was using (I now have a CANON ELF that works nice) to block light from hitting the film when not in use, I got light leak on two shots that got to the edges of the frames. Since these cameras too have plastic parts, who knows what might be getting slightly separated or slightly off from slight decay inside where you cannot see. I did not know that would happen, but did that in the middle of non-use. Also, if you get original FUTURA, it is very hard to expose via its age and the way AGFA made it, so treat it as a daylight-only film and you'll get amazing results. Thanks for another great video!

Can you reload the cartridge? I like using up single perf 16mm ortho cine film in an old 35mm manual rangefinder.

I don't think you can...the film has a special magnetic coating that the camera reads, odd perforations, and the canister itself is quite complicated by the looks of it. It's certainly beyond my technical abilities. That's the problem with "progress"...things become untweakable and unfixable without specialist equipment and proprietary parts. It's a shame, because the camera itself has potential. Thanks for watching 🙂
